From this Thursday at 3 p.m. and until Sunday, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) estimates that there will be 83,000 long-distance trips on the Cantabrian roads, within the framework of Operation Exit on the Constitution Bridge. At the national level, 6.6 million movements are expected, with a notable increase in roads to second homes, tourist areas and municipalities with a Christmas tradition.
The moments of greatest traffic intensity in Cantabria will be concentrated this Thursday between 16.00 and 22.00 hours, as well as the morning of Friday, December 6, a festive day in which there will also be short-distance trips to nearby leisure areas. The return is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
Faced with this increase in travel, the Civil Traffic Guard will deploy a special device to guarantee safety and fluidity on the roads, reinforced by the measures of the Winter Viability Plan approved by the Government Delegation. This plan, which has 46 snow-ploughing machines and 16,000 tons of founders, has been reviewed at a coordination meeting held today under the chairmanship of government delegate Eugenia Gómez de Diego.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for snowfall starting on Sunday, especially in the areas of Campoo and Liébana, which could hinder the return of traffic. Therefore, it is recommended that drivers consult the weather forecasts and the state of the roads through the official channels of the DGT.
Recommendations for adverse conditions
Adverse weather conditions, such as snow, ice, fog or wind, increase the risks at the wheel by reducing grip, hindering visibility and altering driving conditions. The DGT recalls the need to take extreme precautions, reduce speed, increase safety distance and use vehicle lighting.
It is advisable to travel with winter tyres, especially in sections such as the tunnels of the A-67, where the use of chains is unfeasible. In addition, it is important to carry the full fuel tank, a charger for the mobile and, in case of emergency, use applications such as "My112" to facilitate localization.
In case of adverse conditions, the Civil Guard could restrict passage on roads affected by snowfall, limiting the circulation of heavy vehicles to avoid blockages and giving priority to vehicles with winter tyres
The DGT will report on the traffic situation through its website, phone 011, variable signage panels and its social media accounts (@informacionDGT and @DGTes), under the hashtag #BridgeDeEmbre.
