The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, and the mayor of Arnuero, José Manuel Igualó, made a visit on Wednesday to the works of reinforcement of the natural pools located next to the Sabre beach, an intervention carried out by the Coastal Demarcation to improve the security of the infrastructure.
The action is carried out after detecting the municipal technical services that the outer wall of the pools had lost its foundation in the central part, remaining supported only at the ends on the surrounding rocky massif. To solve this situation, the gap between the base of the wall and the rock substrate has been filled by means of a concrete undercut.
“We have responded to the request of the City Council to ensure these natural pools, which are a space much appreciated by the neighbors and visitors of the area. With this intervention, which will end this week, we guarantee the safety of bathers and preserve a natural environment of great tourist and recreational value,” said Gómez de Diego.
For his part, the mayor of Arnuero, José Manuel Igualó, thanked the Government delegate for having met the demand raised by the Consistory. “For us it was a concern. Now, these pools will be better prepared to receive neighbors and tourists, something fundamental for a municipality as linked to the sea as ours,” he stressed.
In addition to the delegate of the Government and the mayor, the head of the Coastal Demarcation, José Antonio Osorio, technicians of this organization, members of the municipal Corporation and managers of the company that carries out the work have also participated in the visit.
Investment over 230,000 euros
The project has included dredging to clean the sand accumulated in the area, as well as formwork and concretizing the base of the wall, with the aim of providing it with lasting stability. This work, which has required the intervention of professional divers, has been carried out with a budget of 230,535.70 euros, financed by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and an initial implementation period of three months.
However, thanks to the favorable sea conditions, the operators will complete the intervention this week, earlier than planned.
It was in 2019 that work began to convert the old lobster nurseries of Isla into natural pools, an initiative of the Consistory financed with just over 300,000 euros by the Government of Spain that has aroused great interest. In addition, in addition to this action, the green and living areas were expanded, and an exhibition area was created on the history of these nurseries in which the people of the sea are also honored through a monument.
