The Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation has begun maintenance, conservation and improvement work on the Suscuaja stream in the vicinity of the town of Abadilla, in the municipality of Santa María de Cayón.
These actions have an initial budget of about 19 500 € and are carried out along 878 m of riverbed, with the aim of removing fallen or at risk of falling trees and adapting the riverside vegetation, in order to avoid or reduce the overflow of the Suscuaja stream.
Accumulations of plant remains and fallen trees, as well as trees with a risk of falling, have been observed in several points of the Suscuaja stream, which could obstruct the stream and pose a risk of flooding for nearby localities.
This work is carried out through the public company Tragsa within the Maintenance and Conservation of Waterways Program developed by the Cantabrian Hydrographic Confederation outside urban areas, since in urban areas the conservation and maintenance of waterways are the responsibility of the municipalities. Until June 1, 2024, in Cantabria, the investment made in conservation and maintenance work of canals amounted to 410,079.42 euros, distributed in 31 actions in 23 municipalities.
