The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has completed the investment of 280,000 euros in San Vicente de la Barquera to improve the circulation of vehicles on the national road N-634, specifically at the intersection that gives access to the Port area.
The delegate of the Government, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, together with the mayor of the municipality, Charo Urquiza, and other members of the municipal Corporation, have visited the completed works, which have been prolonged for four months and have ended before the beginning of the high summer season, as planned. “This new roundabout allows to better channel the turns and give greater fluidity to the traffic, minimizing the retentions that occurred in the era of greater influx,” said Gómez de Diego.
Previously, at this point there was a 'T' intersection that hindered access to the Port, especially for those who tried to access from Unquera, since they had to make a left turn through the opposite lane, which generated a point of conflict.
“This caused traffic to slow down and generate traffic jams, especially in the summer season, when visits to the municipality increase and vehicle traffic intensifies,” explained the delegate in the field.
This area of the municipality is very busy, as it is adjacent to the center and there are public parking and catering establishments. In this regard, Gómez de Diego stressed that the action planned by the Ministry, through the General Demarcation of Roads in Cantabria, will allow “to speed up traffic and minimize traffic conditions.”
In addition, the delegate also stressed that the safety for pedestrians has been improved, since “they will be able to walk using this gazebo also in their travels from the center to the Port.”
“This is an important performance for San Vicente de la Barquera, which has improved traffic and pedestrian safety, and which will be perceived both by the neighbors and by the thousands of tourists who come to enjoy this fantastic coastal municipality of Cantabria,” he added.
Likewise, Gómez de Diego wanted to value this type of work that the Ministry is executing in several municipalities of Cantabria, “with a smaller investment than the large works, such as the Gorge of La Hermida or the third lane of the A-67-, but which are of great importance to improve traffic in our towns and win in road safety.”
For her part, the mayor, Charo Urquiza, has indicated that the entrance to the Barrio de La Barquera “had serious difficulties, especially due to the tourist pressure and the crowding that occurs in the access to the parking.” Thus, the councilor thanked the Government of Spain for this action that “probably will not eradicate the problem, but it will help to reduce those caravans that are generated in the bridge of La Barquera with a more fluid circulation”.
Investment of 280,000 euros
The works, which ended coinciding with the beginning of the summer season, have consisted in the construction of a gazebo with an inner radius of 5 meters and 12 meters of outer radius.
The sides are generally 1 meter wide, both inside and outside, and half a meter outside where there are sidewalks.
In total, the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has invested 281,505 euros in this action.
