José Luis Arteche is retiring today after 44 years at the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in Cantabria, the last twelve as territorial delegate. His replacement will be Arcadio Blasco Loureiro, who joined the AEMET in 2009 and who currently served as head of the Observation Network in Aragón, La Rioja and Navarra.
The delegate of the Government in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, thanked Arteche for the “great work” done during all these years at the head of the AEMET in Cantabria, and highlighted his “undoubted vocation of public service” and “his enormous passion for meteorology that has been able to transmit and infect all the people who have surrounded him and also all those who have read or listened to him through the media”, with whom he regularly collaborated.
At the same time, Gómez de Diego welcomed Blasco Loureiro, wished him “much success” in his new responsibility and took the opportunity to highlight the importance of the work of the AEMET in Cantabria and the contribution of its professionals to public service, meteorology and the fight against climate change.
Arcadio Blasco Loureiro
He joined AEMET in October 2009, belonging to the three bodies of Meteorology (Observers, Graduates and Meteorologists). He joined the State Superior Corps of Meteorologists in 2021. His work at the Agency ranged from aeronautical observer at different airports in the country (Huesca, Zaragoza, Pamplona, Valencia), Basic Systems Unit of Aragón until he assumed the Head of the Observation Network in Aragón, La Rioja, Navarra in 2021.

Territorial delegate of the AEMET in Cantabria since 2012. He belongs to the Superior Corps of State Meteorologists. He joined the former National Institute of Meteorology in 1980. He has been head of the Northern Spain Forecasting and Monitoring Group for years and a United Nations consultant for the Ibero-American Climate Project. He has published in magazines and presented papers at climate and meteorological congresses, especially in meteorology and Climate of the Bay of Biscay. He was the coordinator of the working group on galerias with the regional service of the southwest of Meteo France.
