The Government Delegate in Cantabria, Eugenia Gómez de Diego, paid a visit today to the works of humanization of the crossing of the N-634 in Pámanes, “a project that reflects the commitment of the Government of Spain to improve the quality of life of citizens and the transformation of road infrastructures to make them more sustainable”.
Accompanied by the mayor of Liérganes, Ángel Bordás, Gómez de Diego has checked the status of implementation of the project, which has a budget of almost 600,000 euros contributed by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility from European funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
As indicated by the delegate of the Government, the works have entered their final phase after having completed the action that affects the crossing of Pámanes, where the interurban pedestrian route has been continued, the sidewalks expanded in those points where the width was insufficient and a new section built on the right margin.
In this way, Gómez de Diego continued to explain, the action facilitates pedestrian traffic and accessibility for people with disabilities, and promotes a “more friendly and safe environment for neighbors” by decreasing the speed of circulation and the implementation of green areas and pedestrian crossings.
"Making motorways and roads more environmentally friendly is a challenge that the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility is prioritizing," said the Government Delegate, highlighting the alignment of this project with European guidelines.
In this regard, Gómez de Diego pointed out that “historically, road planning focused on vehicular traffic, but the current vision seeks to integrate these infrastructures into the urban landscape, prioritizing quality of life and environmental sustainability.”
For his part, the mayor of Liérganes, Ángel Bordás, has highlighted the “brutal change” that the work carried out by the Government of Spain is assuming, as well as the “total satisfaction” of the neighbors, who “after the usual doubts that can be generated at the beginning by the inconveniences caused by the works, have now noticed the change and are absolutely delighted”.
More than a road improvement
In the case of the crossing of the N-634 in Pámanes, the project aims to build a safe pedestrian itinerary along 3,320 meters, including measures to reduce the speed throughout the route - especially on the crossing - to improve road safety and make the environment more friendly.
The performance includes different sections, from the beginning in the municipal boundary of Penagos to the end in the municipal boundary of Medio Cudeyo. The recently completed Pámanes crossing provides a safer environment for pedestrians, with continuous and accessible sidewalks, green areas and pedestrian crossings.
The West intercity stretch and the East intercity stretch, whose works continue to be executed and are expected to be completed in spring, will seek to distribute the width of the existing platform to create a separate pedestrian itinerary, thus contributing to the reduction of circulation speed.
Thus, the Government Delegate has insisted that these works “not only seek to improve mobility and road safety, but also seek to improve the lives of neighbors.” "These are humanization projects that make our people greener, more accessible and ultimately more humane," said Gómez de Diego.
The head of the Road Demarcation, Rosendo Martínez, as well as the president of the Junta Vecinal de Pámanes, Ana Isabel Ríos, and other members of the Municipal Corporation have also participated in the visit to the works.
