The oceanic ship ‘Rio Miño’ of the Maritime Service of the Civil Guard, has been in Cantabria since February 24, in order to inspect, and if necessary assist, the fishing boats, which are currently fishing due to the coasts of mackerel and anchovy.
During the first weeks, the ship has its base in the port of Santander, to later continue its surveillance activities throughout the Bay of Biscay. At the end of March it will return to its origin which is the port of Cadiz.
The coastal control services are provided jointly with fisheries inspectors from the Government of Spain, in order to comply with the different regulations in relation to quotas, authorized boats, permitted gear, etc.
In addition, the Civil Guards who serve on the ship perform security work on the ships that are fishing in the northern peninsular, attending to possible emergency situations that may occur.
