The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, accompanied by the Subdelegate of the Government in Las Palmas, Teresa Mayans, and by the island director of the General Administration of the State in Fuerteventura, María Jesús de la Cruz, today presided over the commemorative act of 50 years of Spain in freedom that has organized the Insular Directorate coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the end of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
This event, organized in the central street Primero de Mayo in Puerto del Rosario, combines theater, monologues, music and an exhibition and is part of the events that have organized the seven island headquarters of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands within the initiative Spain in freedom, 50 years implementation by the Government of Spain.
The artistic proposals related to the dictatorship and the reinstatement of a regime of freedom in Spain have been led by the students of Secondary Education, Baccalaureate and Professional Training of educational centers of different municipalities of Fuerteventura.
It is specifically the IES Puerto del Rosario, the IES San Diego de Alcalá, the IES Santo Tomás de Aquino, the CIFP Majada Marcial, the CPEIPS Sagrada Corazón, the IES La Oliva, the IES Corralejo, the IES Vigán and the CEO Antigua.
“We continue to celebrate half a century of freedom in the Canary Islands, as in the rest of the country, and this time we do it in Fuerteventura. Beyond this act, this island will acquire a particular protagonism at the beginning of 2026 in the celebration of the 50 years of Spain in freedom, due to the significance it had as a space of repression of the LGTBI+ collective in Tefía. This was announced only a few days ago by Minister Ángel Víctor Torres,” recalls the government delegate in the Canary Islands.
“At today’s event, our Island Directorate wanted to give the floor to the youngest students, the students of Secondary Education, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training. We wanted them and them to be the protagonists through music and interpretation to send the message that the rejection of dictatorship, totalitarianism, and the defense of freedom are principles that are also very much borne in mind by those who have not lived in dictatorship. It is very important to keep the consciousness and consciousness of freedom alive to avoid the repetition of past mistakes,” he adds.
Today’s event in Puerto del Rosario comes after the celebration of the initiative Spain in freedom, 50 years in El Hierro, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma.
