The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, and the Government subdelegate in Las Palmas, Teresa Mayans, have inaugurated today the commemorative act of the 50 years of Spain in freedom which has been organized by the Delegation and the Subdelegation of the Government in the municipality of Arucas, in Gran Canaria, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the end of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.
The event, in whose inauguration also participated the mayor of Arucas, Juan Jesús Facundo, and the president of the Association for the Historical Memory of Arucas, Pino Sosa, and which is part of the initiative Spain in freedom, 50 years Launched by the Government of Spain, this is a cultural and participatory fair aimed especially at young students, in which the social, cultural and democratic advances of the last half century are celebrated.
“With this initiative we want to value the democratic transformation of Spain and the Canary Islands since 1975, pay tribute to those who made it possible and bring closer to the new generations the values that have made us a prosperous, plural and democratic country,” said the government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana.
“Within the framework of the various activities organized in the Canary Islands around this 50th anniversary, we promote this great cultural fair in Arucas that serves as an intergenerational meeting point and space to celebrate the democratic achievements reached in half a century,” added Pestana, who has stressed the importance of involving all citizens, especially the young public, so as not to forget the path traveled and reinforce the commitment to the values of freedom and democracy that sustain coexistence in our country.
A través de distintos espacios temáticos, talleres y actuaciones se invita a la ciudadanía a reflexionar sobre la importance of freedom, equality and human rights as pillars of our coexistence and projects, exhibitions and artistic creations prepared by the students of Secondary Education in the area are presented.
The different spaces of the fair, which also hosts the exhibition 50 years of Spain and the Canary Islands in freedom, are dedicated to the rights of women and their role in the democracy, diversity and pride of the LGTBIQ+ community, as well as to the books prohibited during the Franco dictatorship, also collecting testimony of those who lived the democratic transition in Spain, literary and poetic creation and artistic expression through painting and music.
After the event held in El Hierro, this event is the second of those that have organized the seven island headquarters of the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands within the initiative Spain in freedom, 50 years implementation by the Government of Spain.
