The Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, accompanied by the subdelegate of the Government in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Javier Plata, and by the island director of the General Administration of the State Juan Luis Navarro, presided today a coordination meeting on citizen security with the Cabildo de La Gomera and the six Gomera municipalities.
The meeting was attended by the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, along with the island councilor for Security and Emergencies, Héctor Cabrera, as well as the mayors of the six Gomera municipalities: de Agulo, Rosa Chinea, de Alajeró, Manuel Ramón Plasencia, de Vallehermoso, Emiliano Coello, de Valle Gran Rey, Borja Barroso, de Hermigua, Solveida Clemente, and San Sebastian de Gomera.
Also present were the commanders of the Civil Guard, headed by the Chief General of the Canary Islands Zone, Juan Hernández; the Chief Colonel of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command, Ángel Sanz, and the Chief Captain of the San Sebastián de La Gomera Company, José Manuel Lebrón.
This meeting, organized to strengthen surveillance measures and improve citizen protection throughout the island, has served to establish synergies that allow progress to be made in improving surveillance resources and capacities, especially in the areas with the greatest influx of residents and visitors, a need that intensifies during the summer months, but which must remain a priority throughout the year.
The government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, informed at the meeting of the expansion of the Civil Guard catalog by eight troops in the last year, in addition to announcing that 10 more agents will be incorporated in practices at the beginning of July. Pestana highlighted the extraordinary data that the island has: “La Gomera has 20 points below the regional average, and 23 points below the national average, it is a very safe island.”
For his part, the president of the Cabildo de La Gomera praised the climate of tranquility that characterizes the island, although he insisted: “Although La Gomera continues to preserve its values of tranquility, we have a challenge ahead of us that is to provide ourselves with the necessary means so that those of us who live here and those who visit us continue to feel in a space of peace and tranquility.”
In addition, Casimiro Curbelo confirmed that progress is already being made in the incorporation of the General Corps of the Canary Islands Police permanently on the island, which will mean an important reinforcement for the island security services.
One of the central issues addressed was the shortage of Local Police personnel, since currently only two of the six Gomero municipalities have operational bodies, a reality that requires redoubling efforts and establishing inter-administrative collaboration mechanisms to guarantee citizen security.
The meeting ended with the commitment to maintain a stable line of work between all the administrations involved, with the common purpose of guaranteeing security on the island and strengthening the environment of coexistence that characterizes La Gomera.
