As part of its awareness-raising activities on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25N, the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands has today premiered the theatrical work ReVIVIla at the CICCA Cultural Center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, aimed mainly at Baccalaureate students.
This performance, whose premiere was attended by the government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, and the government subdelegate in Las Palmas, Teresa Mayans, tells the story of Francisca de Pedraza, a 16th century woman who fights against the vision of society of the time to be able to recognize the mistreatment received by her husband.
The case of Francisca de Pedraza is today remembered as a milestone in the fight against gender violence in Spain, as she was one of the first women to win a court judgment for gender violence despite the legal and social limitations faced by women in her time, the 16th century.
On the occasion of the premiere, Anselmo Pestana has highlighted the figure of Francisca de Pedraza: “The story told in this work is not known,” he says, “but it is important to transmit these experiences to sensitize citizens and demonstrate that all women can fight for their freedom and independence.”
After the first performance, the students present, from the IES Tomás Morales, IES Simón Pérez, IES Isabel de España, IES Pérez Galdós, IES Guanarteme, IES Siete Palmas, IES Primero de Mayo and IES Ana Luisa Benítez, have been able to share a talk with the protagonists of the work, the actress Marta Fuenar and the actor Jon Arraéz.
In addition, the initiative financed by the funds of the State Pact against Gender Violence will lead the production company of the work, Cereza Producciones, to perform various functions on the island of Gran Canaria to continue telling the story of Pedraza.
These functions will be carried out in several educational centers of the island: on December 4 it will be represented in the IES La Herradura (Telde), on December 11 the work will travel to the IES Josefina de la Torre (Neighborhood) and on December 12 it will be in the IES Guía (Santa María de Guía).
