The delegate of the Government in Asturias, Adriana Lastra, and the Commissioner for the Neighbourhoods in Asturias and Cantabria of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Antonio Berrios, visited the Centre for the Regulation of the Circulation of El Berrón together with the mayor of Siero, Ángel García, to check the progress of the actions of the Proximity Plan of Asturias, with which 1,313 million have already been mobilised, almost 70% of the total planned investment of 1,884 million euros.
Among the actions, the renovation of roads, the improvement of signage, the accessibility of stations and the suppression of steps at level stand out. In particular, In Siero, more than 206 million euros will be invested within the commitment to the Asturian railway network.
The El Berrón Traffic Regulation Centre, renovated by Adif in February 2024 and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, employs 80 professionals in the integrated management of the circulation of conventional and meter-wide networks in Asturias.
Likewise, the new maintenance base of El Berrón, whose construction has been awarded for 5.2 million euros, will gather in the same enclosure the currently dispersed facilities, turning this area into a neuralgic enclave of the Asturian railway network.
With this visit, the importance of El Berrón as a reference railway node in Asturias, for its concentration of infrastructures, maintenance services and technical personnel, as well as for the direct impact of these investments on the security, reliability and travel times of the Commuter service.
Railway actions in Siero
The council of Siero has 16 stations on 5 lines of Cerca, in addition to the Traffic Regulation Center, the maintenance base and a rolling stock workshop, which explains the strategic weight of Siero within the Asturian railway system.
Among the main performances in Siero are the Improvement of accessibility in stations of Lugones, Pola de Siero and El Berrón, with an investment of 0.76 million, 2.8 million and 1.89 million, respectively. Likewise, the doubling of the track in the La Carrera–Pola stretch of Siero will involve an investment of 25.7 million, which will be completed with 6.3 million for signage.
Work will also begin soon for renovate the track on the 41 kilometre Colloto-Infiesto stretch, with an investment of 31.8 million euros, in which in addition another 23 million will be invested for the improvement of signaling.
In addition, Adif is working with Siero City Council to advance projects for the Suppression of 12 steps at the level, with a planned investment of 12 million euros and with a particularly significant performance in El Bayu.
In the same way, the signalling facilities of the Gijón-El Berrón section will be improved, with an investment of 20.2 million euros, after the entry into service of the renewal of the Gijón-Laviana line, which involved an investment of 57 million euros.
All these actions for the renewal of the tracks, of the signage and of technological innovations in the control of the circulation will mean important improvements for the safety, reliability and reduction of times of the commuter trains of Asturias, which reflects the commitment of the Government of Spain with Asturias.
