Aragonese exports represent, according to data for the month of August, 1,108.3 million euros, which implies a decrease of 7.1% compared to the same period of the previous year, and a decrease of 36.3% compared to the month of July. In any case, if you take into account the figures accumulated since January, Aragonese exports reach 11,391 million euros, which translates into an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. The report, prepared by the Territorial Directorate of Trade-ICEX in Aragon of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, with data provided by the Customs Department of the AEAT, also shows that total monthly imports amount to 1,146.8 million euros, falling by 2.6% compared to the previous year with an intermonthly drop of 41.7%.
However, the commercial balance in this period has a deficit of 38.5 million euros and the coverage rate stands at 96.6%. Aragonese exports accounted for 4.2% of total Spanish exports in the month of August 2023.
The main sectors that contributed to the growth of exports in Aragon came from the food, beverages and tobacco and automobile sectors. The sectors that contributed negatively were the consumer manufacturing sector, non-chemical semi-manufactures, capital goods and durable consumer goods. In terms of imports, the sectors that contributed positively were mainly the automobile sector, and capital goods. The largest negative contributions were from the consumer manufacturing, chemicals, durable consumer goods and raw materials sectors.
The European Union remains the main destination for Aragonese exports, accounting for 69.7% of the total, increasing by 6.3% compared to the previous year. Of the main partners, the increases in sales to Italy (30.5%) and Portugal (6.5%) stand out. Exports to third countries account for 30.3% of the total, decreasing to all regions. The increases, among other countries, to Taiwan (804.4%), Peru (26.4%) or Singapore (17.9%) can be highlighted positively.
January-August period
As has been said, Aragonese exports accumulated in the January-August period reached 11,391 million euros, which implies an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. Imports in that set of months reached 12,477.3 million euros with an increase of 31.7%. As a result, the commercial balance in this period has a deficit of 1,086.3 million euros. The coverage rate stands at 91.3%. The export activity of Aragon represents 4.4% of the total domestic sales abroad.
The main export sectors in the period January-August 2023 with the greatest positive contribution have been the automotive, food, beverages and tobacco and capital goods sectors. The negative contributions came from the non-chemical semi-invoice sector, consumer manufactures, chemicals and durable consumer goods. The main importing sectors by positive contribution were automotive, equipment and food, beverages and tobacco. The main negative contributions came from the consumer manufacturing, chemicals, raw materials and durable consumer goods sector.
The European Union remains the main destination for Aragonese exports, accounting for 70.7% of the total in the January-August period, increasing by 15.7% compared to the previous year. Of the main partners, the cumulative increases to Italy (38.1%), France (11.4%), Germany (8.2%) and Portugal (6.8%) stand out. Exports to third countries accounted for 29.3% although they fell by 14.8% year-on-year, highlighting the decline in sales to all regions. By country, the increases to Taiwan (108%), Singapore (29.2%) or Morocco (21.3%) among others can be highlighted in this period.
