It is a state-owned archive integrated into the Archival System of Defense and dependent on the Institute of Military History and Culture (Spanish Army, Ministry of Defense), and aims to organize, protect, preserve and disseminate the documentary heritage of the Spanish Army in the service of research, culture, information and administrative management.
In accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 2598/1998, of 4 December, it is a public archive, accessible to research and receiving the closed documentation of more than 5 years from the different central archives of the Military Units, Centers and Agencies located in the Autonomous Communities of Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Galicia, Basque Country and La Rioja, and to transfer documents more than 20 years old to the Military General Archives.
Due to the characteristics of its documentary funds, the Archive provides a preferential service to the consultation of documents for the exercise of rights, but also facilitates the consultation for cultural and research purposes of any document, except those containing data that are restricted by the provisions in force.
In addition to the funds corresponding to its area of competence, known as administrative funds, the Northwest Military Intermediate Archive guards on deposit the cases and procedures corresponding to the military justice organs of the northwest of the Peninsula belonging to the Military Court IV, based in the city of A Coruña.
