Social Security registered 706,943 foreign contributors in average terms in the Community of Madrid in September, according to data published today by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration. These figures represent a new record at the regional level, with an increase in contributors of 2.65% compared to August, 18,233 more contributors.
In the year-on-year comparison, the region has 93,795 foreign affiliates in the last year, an increase of 15.3% compared to September 2025.
Regarding the distribution by nationality, 513,176 contributors are of non-EU origin, which represents 82.59% of the global figures. In the distribution by sex, about half are women, 333,974 in total. Finally, the general regime accommodates 561,615 members, or 79.44%.
Record also in the national data
In the whole of Spain, Social Security has exceeded 3.6 million foreign affiliates in terms of average affiliation in September, a figure that is also surpassed in the seasonally adjusted series. Specifically, the system accounts for 3,635,979 foreign affiliates on average this month, 84,220 more than in August and 547,637 more than a year ago. Foreign affiliation thus grew by 17.7% year-on-year.
The evolution of foreign affiliation maintains a sustained trajectory of growth. Since 2022, the number of workers from other countries has increased by about 1.2 million. In fact, 52.3% of the employment created since the implementation of the labor reform corresponds to foreign workers.
If the seasonality and the effect of the calendar are discounted, Social Security already has 3,611,771 foreign affiliates, after incorporating 543,991 in the last twelve months.
This growth also occurs in a labor market in which foreign affiliation presents an increasingly diversified presence, both by sectors of activity and by modalities of employment and forms of participation.
In addition, their contribution takes place in the youngest age groups, thanks in particular to foreigners from outside the European Union. 40.5% of non-EU members are under 35 years of age, compared to 24.6% of Spanish domestic workers. On the other hand, only 10.2% of affiliates in the rest of the world (non-EU) are over 54 years old, while among Spaniards this figure is 24.4%.
Impact of regularisation
The affiliation of foreign workers has shown a special dynamism during the year, with an acceleration of growth since the end of April that has coincided with the implementation of the extraordinary process of regularization of foreign persons. As of September 30, the number of foreign affiliates regularized in discharge by the extraordinary process amounted to 421,306 in the context of an affiliation that exceeds 22.4 million average employed persons (22,437,553).
77.4% (326,256) were covered by the General Social Security System, while 22,681 were self-employed.
By sex, 60.2% were men (253,490) and 39.8% were women (167,815).
Average affiliation
Of the 3,635,979 foreign affiliates on average registered in September, 2,085,568 are men and 1,550,411 women. Women already account for 42.6 per cent of the total number of foreign workers involved.
The year-on-year growth rate is particularly high in Colombian workers, which stands at 53.1% (134,332 more members) and in Venezuelans, where the pace is accelerating to 20.9%, after adding up to 43,361 since September last year.
By nationality, Morocco is still the country with the most members of the Spanish Social Security, with 425,064 contributors. It is followed by Colombia with 387,371, Romania with 338,810, Venezuela with 250,468, Italy with 221,980, Peru with 146,079, China with 138,572, Ukraine with 84,831, Ecuador with 84,120 and Honduras with 82,941.
Sectors of employed persons
Although they represent 16.2 per cent of all workers, the contribution of foreign workers is particularly relevant in some sectors of the General Social Security System.
In Hospitality, they represent 33.7% of the members; in Agriculture, 30.7%; in Construction, 27.9%; in Administrative Activities, 20.4% and in Transport, 18.8%.
They also have a prominent role in the special systems: they represent 48.7% of the members of the Special Home System and 40.9% of the Special Agrarian System.
The activities that have grown the most in September have been: Education (+18.9%), Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing (+13%), Construction (+4.1%) and Administrative Activities and Auxiliary Services (+3.8%).
Mostly with an indefinite contract
It is necessary to highlight the high percentage of foreign workers with indefinite contracts, 86.2% of the total, 27.3 points higher than on average in the period 2017-2021, prior to the labor reform (58.9%).
In parallel, the temporary rate of this group of workers falls to 13.8% while the percentage of national affiliates with temporary contracts is 12.2%.
546,000 foreign self-employed workers
On the other hand, the number of foreign self-employed workers continues to grow and stands at 546,242, which is 11.3% more than a year ago.
We must point out the growing presence of foreign workers who undertake in highly qualified sectors, such as Telecommunications and Computer Programming, where they already represent 33.7% of the employed persons registered in this section of activity, that is, they are already one in three self-employed. It also stands out for its presence in other activities, such as Household Activities (27.1%), Hotel Management (25.9%), Administrative Activities (20.3%), Construction (19.4%) and Real Estate Activities (18.5%).
