The Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, met this morning with Borja Sánchez, Minister of Science, Industry and Employment of the Principality of Asturias, to discuss the modifications experienced by the Planning Proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), after analyzing the 2,566 allegations received during the hearing phase.
The meeting with the Government of the Principality is part of a round of contacts with the autonomous communities, which is taking place in accordance with the protocol order, to explain to them the changes introduced in the new Proposal, within the framework of its processing.
NINE SUBSTATIONS AND 87 KILOMETRES OF LINES
In the case of Asturias, the new MITECO Proposal contemplates the construction of nine substation parks and performances in most of the existing ones, as well as the construction of 87 Km of lines, to which is added the reempowerment of another 256 Km of lines to increase their capacity.
There are three performances with the consideration of preferential: the Central Electric Ring, the Asturias-León axis and a synchronous compensator in Santa María de Grado to improve the stability of the electrical system. This makes it possible to prioritize these projects in the overall planning.
Overall, MITECO plans to meet an additional demand of 2.6 GW in the transport network, to which will be added the access capacity that emerges in the distribution networks, with new supports. The industry – which consumes 67% of the electricity of the Principality – is the type of consumption for which the greatest capacity is enabled, which is also growing to meet housing, port electrification and land transport needs.
With regard to the Planning Proposal submitted to a public hearing in December 2025, new reinforcements are now included to connect different industrial consumptions, support distribution in port areas and increase the capacity of existing lines. Also, in relation to the Electric Ring, there is a reinforcement in the Reboria-Cardoso section.
The new Proposal also plans to increase the access capacity for renewable generation by more than 1.5 GW mainly for wind and storage facilities, including hydroelectric pumping.
