The City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN), a dependent entity of the Institute for the Just Transition (ITJ), both entities attached to the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), continues in Asturias with the training program of the Network of Coal Tourism Experiences, an initiative that seeks to provide local agents with knowledge and tools to transform the mineral-industrial heritage into new experiences and tourism products.
The training in Asturias will be developed through three days in the Pozo Sotón, in San Martín del Rey Aurelio and are designed to respond to the needs and characteristics of the territories linked to the mining tradition. The program will focus on improving the quality and capacity of tourism experiences, advancing their commercialization and sustainability and strengthening the connection between the different resources and agents to build an integrated mining tourism offer. The initiative is part of a training program that is developed in the territories that currently make up the Network and that aims to strengthen cooperation between areas with mining tradition, share knowledge and develop tourism products linked to a common heritage. The project seeks to consolidate a stable structure of collaboration that allows to value these resources as differentiating elements of the Just Transition Territories. Three days to improve and connect mining tourism experiences.
The first day will be held tomorrow, October 8, at 4:30 p.m., and will be dedicated to the creation of value, quality and experiences in Coal Tourism. The session will analyze the existing offer in the basins of Nalón and Caudal and will work on the transformation of mining resources into differentiated tourism products, improving their story, quality and ability to generate attractive experiences for visitors.
The second session will address the commercialization, sustainability and seasonalization of the mining tourism offer. The work will focus on improving the regularity and viability of the experiences, strengthening their commercialization and promotion and advancing the coordination and cooperation between the different agents and resources of the territory. The program will conclude, in a third day, with a workshop aimed at the creation and connection of mining experiences and the construction of an integrated tourist destination.
This meeting will allow us to review and improve existing experiences based on accessibility, inclusion, sustainability and quality criteria, and work on its connection with other resources and services through itineraries, cross-recommendations and coordinated programming, with the aim of reinforcing a common vision of the mining territory.
A network to share knowledge and generate new opportunities
The training in Asturias is part of an initiative, which emerged in 2025, which aims to consolidate a stable structure of cooperation between territories with mining tradition, favoring the exchange of knowledge and experiences and the development of joint tourist products. These training days, led by the City of Energy Foundation (CIUDEN) began in September in Ponferrada to later take place in As Pontes (A Coruña) and Escuchar (Teruel), which, together with Asturias and Andalusia, are the territories in which this Network of Coal Tourism Experiences is initially being established.
The training actions have been adapted to the needs of each territory and seek that the resources linked to the mining past can be integrated into tourism proposals capable of connecting heritage, memory, landscape, culture and local economic activity.
In the case of Asturias, the program also proposes to move from an offer based on resources and individual experiences towards a shared territorial vision, taking advantage of the proximity and complementarity of the facilities, companies and agents of the Nalón and Caudal basins. In this way, the conference aims to contribute to improving the tourist offer linked to the mining heritage, strengthen cooperation between agents and promote the creation of connected experiences that allow progress towards a mining tourist destination.
