The Government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, accompanied by the Director General of Adif High Speed, Juan Pablo Villanueva, and the Mayor of A Coruña, Inés Rey, visited on Thursday the new provisional train station of San Cristobal, with which the city "moves steadily towards the new mobility of the 21st century".
The government delegate pointed out that this infrastructure, in which the government invested 4.5 million euros, “was an action that was not initially contemplated, but that we believe is necessary to provide the railway service that the people of Cordoba deserve.”
Pedro Blanco took the opportunity to highlight the commitment of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility to intermodality in Galicia, with actions underway in the stations of Santiago Lugo and Ourense, which add a joint investment by the Government of more than 274 million euros.
Adif AV puts into service this Saturday, December 14, the new passenger building in A Coruña, a large and bright space, sustainable and functional, which guarantees the provision of the rail transport service, and the comfort and accessibility of passengers, as it completes the remodeling and expansion of the A Coruña station that it currently promotes.
The new terminal is located on the Avenida del Tren, about 350 m (five minutes walk) on the west side of the historical building of the station.
In the 1.125 m2 area of the new building, travelers have a large lobby and waiting area (535 m2), boarding room, cafeteria, toilets, ticket sales and traveler information areas, and Adif About office for assistance to passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility. Eleven new information monitors have been deployed in these facilities, as well as seats and other equipment such as mobile chargers.
The terminal gives access, through its boarding hall, to the six tracks and three platforms, covered with canopies. To two of them directly and to a third, by means of a catwalk also covered.
As for its connection, it has a taxi and urban bus stop in front of its main entrance and, since January, also with a parking (97 places), with access by the avenue of Sardiñeira and that connects to the terminal through a walkway on the tracks.
Sustainability and natural light
The new building is also characterized by its sustainability: in its interior natural lighting prevails, thanks to its double row of windows, and covers part of its energy consumption with solar panels deployed on its roof.
With this passenger terminal, Adif AV completes the first phase of the expansion of the A Coruña station, which also includes the implementation of a new and higher performance interlock (a computer device that remotely manages all the signals of a railway section).
Service compatibility and renewal challenge
Adif AV overcomes a new technical and planning challenge as part of its commitment to, wherever possible, make the railway service compatible with the major extension and modernisation actions underway in the railway network and its stations.
The new terminal guarantees the service of rail transport and passengers: it allows to continue having the six tracks of the station, maintain the circulation capacity, and the service and comfort of passengers, avoiding their passage through a terminal under construction.
And, at the same time, it facilitates Adif AV to promote the following phases of remodeling and expansion of A Coruña, an action that, with an investment of more than 86 million euros, puts in value its marquee and historic building (the only example of the Neo-Romanesque in the railway), remodels its tracks and platforms, and strengthens its integration in the city (reform of the access plaza, and construction of new parking and walkway).
The A Coruña station will thus respond to the increase in traffic and passengers, associated with the arrival of high speed in Galicia and liberalization, and the new demands of sustainable mobility. Once this renewal is complete, the terminal that is now enabled will go on to accommodate other uses.
The refurbishment and extension of the station, which is part of the Atlantic Corridor, is part of the Convention for the Development of the Intermodality Area of Passenger Transport of the city, signed by the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, the Xunta de Galicia and the City of Cordoba, to promote sustainable and multimodal mobility, and also includes the construction of a bus station next to the railway station.
It joins the ambitious projects of modernization and expansion that Adif promotes in other stations of Galicia, such as Santiago de Compostela, Ourense and Lugo.
These actions contribute to SDGs number 9 (promoting reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructure), 7 (sustainability) and 11 (inclusive cities with access to sustainable modes of transport).
European funding
This action will have European funding through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union- NextGenerationEU.
