- The government delegate in Cantabria participated this Friday in the laying of the first stone of Muelle Raos 6, which represents an investment of 22.8 million euros
The government delegate in Cantabria, Pedro Casares, has urged the administrations, the port community and companies to “create alliances” so that the Port of Santander “continues to advance as never before in its history”, with transformations and investments that allow the Cantabrian infrastructure “to grow more, attract more and be more competitive”.
This was stated by the government delegate this Friday in the laying of the first stone of the construction works of the Raos 6 Pier, which represents an investment of 22.8 million euros and will be destined to the traffic of goods and solid bulk.
Casares has considered that the construction of the Raos 6 Pier is not only an infrastructure works but is “an investment in a future that is already here and that has come to stay” and that represents “prosperity, progress and growth”. “The demonstration that the Port of Santander grows, advances and enhances its development as we would never have imagined,” he added.
The works to build this new pier, 212 meters long and with which the Port will have another 20,000 square meters of extension, will be prolonged for 20 months and will be executed by the UTE formed by the companies SIEC and SATO.
The government delegate stressed that it has been “quick” to place this first stone of the works since “it was last March 25 of this year when the Council of Ministers authorized the tender of these works.” “Seven months later, here we are,” he said.
The representative of the State has praised that this action is part of “a before and after” in this Port that “we are building together” with investments to increase docking capacity, container traffic and logistics capacity and, with all this, its competitiveness.
“In short, the Port of Santander increases and grows and everything translates into strengthening the business fabric, more investments and greater opportunities for economic and productive development,” said Casares, who noted that all of this, in addition, “responds to a need.”
As he said, the Port of Santander “has become small in the face of the great transformations and investments of recent years, which have made it continue to be consolidated as a reference in the north of Spain and in the whole of the Spanish port system”.
“FRUIT OF MANY YEARS OF WORK”
In addition, the government delegate has insisted that all this “has not arrived alone” but is “the result of the work of many years and of the commitment of many presidents of the Port Authority, of several governments of Cantabria and of the impulse of the Government of Spain to make it a reality”.
He also highlighted the role of the port community and also of public-private collaboration in that process of growth of the Port of Santander and cited as an example the installation of the container terminal of Boluda in 2023 that “has changed to improve the evolution” of the port infrastructure of Cantabria.
And now, with this future Muelle Raos 6, Casares has praised that it responds to the need for more capacity to attract bulk carriers whose traffic “is rebounding” in the Spanish port system and, of course, also in the Port of Santander.
This action, he said, will have a second phase with which this wharf will reach 325 linear meters and greater depth, which will allow “vessels of greater segment, more modern and with greater growth” to access the Port.
The government delegate intervened in the act of beginning the construction works of Muelle Raos 6 together with the president of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga; and the president of the Port Authority, César Díaz. The event was also attended by the mayors of Santander and Camargo, Gema Igualand Diego Movellán, and the councillors of Development and Industry of the Government of Cantabria, Roberto Media and Eduardo Arasti.
