The scientific and technical response deployed by public research bodies has been a constant since the eruption. However, its role becomes more relevant once the emergency is over, since can help mitigate the impact of the natural disaster and prevent similar situations in the future. In this regard, EUR 2.5 million has been allocated in grants to universities and state and regional public centres for the implementation of the following research projects:
- The strengthening of R&D&I activities aimed at reducing volcanic risk in La Palma, by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands.
- The cleaning of facilities and equipment and the purchase of equipment prevention, by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands.
- Actions of monitoring, evaluation and monitoring multidisciplinary of the eruption and its effects on the population and territory, by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of La Laguna.
- The evaluation of the consequences of the eruption in the banana crops, by the Canary Institute of Agrarian Research.
Together with these projects, a part of the total amount has been allocated to the CSIC, ISCIII, PLOCAN and GRANTERIAN to continue the projects of monitoring the marine environment, air quality assessment and protection of the Gran Telescope de Canarias launched during the emergency.
All these studies are presented in the scientific committee of PEVOLCA and will allow to inform the design of strategies for the reconstruction of infrastructures on flows or for the recovery of the natural environment.
