The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (Mitma), through Adif High Speed, advances in the development of the new high-speed line Castejón-Comarca of Pamplona with the tender of the Tafalla–Campanas section, approved by the Board of Directors of the railway manager. The project, which represents an investment of 281.6 million euros, will consolidate a new railway connection, which will strengthen the mobility of passengers and goods in the Foral Community of Navarre.
The new section, whose completion time is 30 months and includes the execution of 3 tunnels and 1 viaduct, as well as upper and lower passes to facilitate permeability, is included in the Castejón-Comarca route of Pamplona and runs through seven municipalities: Tafalla, Pueyo, Garínoain, Barásoain, Tirapu, Biurrún-Olcoz and Tiebas-Muruarte de Reta.
Among the unique performances to be carried out in this section, the construction of three tunnels stands out: the Cathedral tunnel (474 m), the Artzareta tunnel (658 m) and the Murugain tunnel (506.9 m).
It also includes the construction of a viaduct that will save the stream of La Majada, of 546 m in length, in addition to the upper and lower passes that will promote permeability on both sides of the railway line. In addition, the construction of a train overtaking and parking station (PAET) in Garínoain, between kilometer points 404/248 and 406/534, is contemplated, which will allow the parking of freight trains.
The project includes several structures for the crossing of various pipelines and the replacement of the Camino de Santiago, through a superior step in Tiebas-Muruarte de Reta. In addition, and in order to maintain the railway circulation along the Castejón-Alsasua line, the replacement of about 3.5 km will be carried out in the final part of the stretch, which will affect the Campanas apartment.
The Cantabrian-Mediterranean Corridor is one of the main axes of the national trans-European railway network and is constituted by different sections that run through both corridors, connecting the main logistics centers and the French border through the Basque Country of the Atlantic Corridor with the Mediterranean Coastal Corridor, through Valencia.
High speed connection to Navarre
Adif AV runs the Navarre high-speed corridor, in the stretch between Castejón (link with the Zaragoza - Logroño route) and Pamplona, composed of five sections:
Castejón-Villafranca, whose platform works, already completed, were executed by the Government of Navarre;
Villafranca-Olite, composed of the two subsections, Villafranca-Peralta -under construction - and Peralta-Olite, completed;
Olite-Tafalla, formed by two subsections, Olite-Tafalla(s) and Tafalla(s)-Tafalla, both in execution;
Tafalla–Campanas, whose works are now being tendered;
Campanas-Esquíroz, the drafting of the project is conditioned by the informative study (EI) of the Railway Network of the region of Pamplona. Mitma has in public information both this EI, and the one of the Zaragoza–Castejón section.
In addition, the work of construction of the viaduct on the River Ebro is addressed, after its recent award of 58.8 million euros.
All these actions contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), which has among its goals the development of reliable, sustainable, resilient and quality infrastructures.
European funding
The works of the viaduct of the River Ebro and the Tafalla–Campanas stretch are funded by Europe through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
