- “Since 2018, the Government of Spain has awarded more than 2,350 million euros for the modernization of the railway network of the Region, which means tripling the investment compared to the previous stage”
April 28, 2026. The government delegate highlighted today in Alhama de Murcia the historical investment of the Government of Spain to modernize the railway network of the Region of Murcia. During a visit to the works of the High Speed, Francisco Lucas said that this investment is especially important in Alhama de Murcia, and cited the viaduct and the new station as two of the most important infrastructures of the project as it passes through the town.
“Since 2018, the Government of Spain has awarded more than 2,350 million euros for the modernization of the railway network of the Region. It has tripled the investment compared to the previous stage of the People’s Party. Eight years ago there was no Mediterranean Corridor project done. Now, the situation is different. All the sections of the Mediterranean Corridor between Murcia and Almería are finished or in execution,” he said.
Lucas has indicated that the Alhama viaduct, which is 1.94km long and is essential to ensure mobility in the area and reduce the risk of flooding, is one of the most important of the Murcia-Almería corridor.
“This viaduct is the piece that allows the High Speed to pass through Alhama without "breaking" the municipality. By elevating the train, total ground-level connectivity is maintained for pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles. In addition, it has a critical function of hydraulic permeability, since, by flying over the area, the impact on the natural drainage network of the orchard is minimized and the response to possible water avenues is improved, thus protecting the urban center,” he said.
New station of Alhama
Regarding the new station of Alhama, the government delegate explained that it has been designed in the municipality, completely integrated in its social and economic reality, prepared for double traffic (people and goods), prepared for the climate and the passage of time and integrated in other modes of transport, bicycles, motorized vehicles and pedestrians.
During his day in Alhama, Lucas also visited the headquarters of the Civil Guard and met with its mayor, Rosa Sánchez, with whom he later visited the office of social services of the municipality.
“Here we have seen a clear example that when the issue is not politicized to attack the Government of Spain, a perfect pre-appointment system can be organized to attend to immigrants in their procedures for the regularization process that is under way,” said Lucas.
Works of the AVE to Cartagena
Regarding the alleged use of contaminated materials in the works of the AVE to Cartagena, the government delegate has assured that the Government of Spain is acting with the utmost rigor, diligence and transparency, and has demanded explanations from the Regional Government.
“SEPRONA is investigating on the basis of a complaint by an individual, and what the government of López Mire has to do is to collaborate with this investigation and provide SEPRONA with the information that it has requested and that, so far, it has not provided,” he said.
Lucas added that the authorization of quarries and the extraction of materials is the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry, and therefore it is the Regional Government that has to clarify if the construction company had authorization to extract the materials, if the quarry has all the appropriate permits to be open and if contaminated waste from the Jenny Pond has been deposited in that quarry.
“Therefore, there are two things to which López Mire has to respond. On the one hand, if you can assure that no material from that quarry has been used for any work competing with the Autonomous Community. And on the other hand, if it is confirmed that the Autonomous Community deposited waste from the Jenny raft there, how is it possible that the regional government kept it open?, he wondered.
The works continue
Finally, the government delegate has confirmed that the works of this section have not been suspended, that all the actions continue, and that the only thing that has been paralyzed is the supply of material from that quarry.
