Transportes opens a new high-speed road at the Chamartín station – Clara Campoamor
New milestone in the renewal and expansion of this neuralgic station
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif AV, put into service last day 20 the 19th way of the Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station which, for the first time since the beginning of the expansion works, will have nine high-speed tracks already available.
The Chamartín station thus passes from having, in the beginning, six terminal high-speed tracks (with no continuity to the south) to, once the extension of the main lobby is completed, having 12 throughways (with exit to the north and south) for high-speed trains. As of today, there are already 9 high-speed tracks in operation, of which 5 are passes (21, 22, 23, 24 and 25) and four are operational at the northern head (15, 16, 19 and 20).
Adif AV continues to work to put into service next year the complete renovation of Chamartín-Clara Campoamor which, with an investment of 557 M€, will allow to double the capacity for high-speed trains and spaces for travelers, as well as consolidate the station as a strategic node of Cerca.
This transformation is being carried out in phases to maintain the railway circulation and the operating station at all times, with a constant increase in passengers. Thus, in 2024, Chamartín managed 44.4 million passengers, compared to 36.2 million in 2023 and 29.9 million in 2022.
The entire expansion of Chamartín is being carried out with the aim of increasing the capacity of high-speed services and improving the functionality of the station, as well as the user experience, generating wider, comfortable and bright spaces.
This work is carried out prior to and independent of the integral transformation that in the future will be undertaken in the station and its environment, within the framework of the Open Ecosystem Chamartín project.
Progress in the renewal process
In the last two months, Adif AV has reached several milestones in the extension of the station. The last was made available to travelers the past December 10, with the opening of another 2.112 m2 additional main hall, That already has 6,712 m2.
Simultaneously, the accesses have been reorganized, partially recovering the main entrance, which allows to continue the work of demolition of the existing commercial premises and advance both in the future urbanization of the station square and in the integral renovation of the lobby.
The main lobby in the High Speed area is distributed in 1.501 m2 Before the passage through the radioscopies and other 5.211 m2 After the access control, in which two restoration spaces, public toilets, 400 seats, self-sale machines and chargers for electronic devices are located. In addition, it has 36 65” Led screens and 12 variable message panels for user information, with real-time information of arrivals and departures of high-speed trains.
In November, the passing road traffic was re-established in the square, after the reopening of the Hiedra street viaduct, facilitating the connection of the streets Agustín de Foxá and Padre Francisco Palau and Quer with Pio XII and the M-30. The works carried out in the East access of the station (Calle Hiedra) allowed to build four new high-speed walkways (22 to 25), expand the main lobby to the east and build a new slab for the taxi service.
In addition, Adif AV finished on 15 October lower pass under the 12 high-speed tracks of the station and its connection to the central foyer of Cerca. Since then, high-speed passengers can leave on both sides of Chamartín directly and easily.
The new Lower High-Speed Pass, with an area of 2,300 m2, is designed to facilitate a quick and comfortable departure for travelers. To do this, it has a connection with all high-speed platforms by means of elevators, mechanical stairs and fixed stairs, and is equipped with indicator screens.
All these actions contribute to the achievement of SDGs 9 (promotion of reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructure), 11 (access to safe, accessible and sustainable transport systems), 8 (contribution to economic growth and employment) and 7 (energy efficiency).
