The DGT has launched this week a campaign dedicated to the control and monitoring of the conditions of the vehicles, which will be in force until June 11, in which inspections will be carried out on the age and state of the technical inspection and on the maintenance and fine-tuning of the main elements of vehicle safety.
In the previous campaign, from 10 to 16 October 2022 in Extremadura, a total of 3,739 vehicles were controlled, of which 300 were reported. Of the total number of checks carried out, 1,816 were carried out in Badajoz, with 214 vehicles reported and 1,923 in Cáceres, with 86.
At the national level
According to DGT data at the national level, the fleet of cars under 25 years of age represents 86% of all registered vehicles, and vehicles under 15 years of age account for 57% of the census. The age of the vehicle is a risk factor because it lacks recently implemented safety systems and equipment, in addition to the problems arising from its use. For these reasons, the risk of death or serious injury is doubled when comparing accidents involving vehicles 10 to 15 years old in relation to vehicles less than 5 years old.
There is also a relationship between the age of the vehicle involved in the accident and the state of its technical inspection. In the case of motorcycles, the percentage of vehicles with expired inspection increases from 2% between 0 and 4 years, to 10% from 10 years. In passenger cars, there is an increase from 4% between the ages of 5 and 9, to 9% from the age of 15.
In vans and trucks up to 3,500 kg, the percentage of vehicles with expired inspection ranges from 3% to 21%. In trucks over 3,500kg, the variation is between 2% and 23%.
