More than 60 people in Castilla y León every day still do not wear their seatbelt when traveling
Results of the belt and SRI use campaign
April 3, 2024. Safety belt and child restraint systems are among the most effective measures to protect people in motor vehicles. So far this year in Castilla y León, of the 22 deceased who traveled in tourism, 20 of them are already known whether or not they used any safety device, 6 of them were not wearing it at the time of the accident (30%). This fact is reflected in the last surveillance campaign on the use of the belt and CRS that the General Directorate of Traffic carried out between March 11 and 17.
The results confirm a reality, and that is that there is still a sector of the population that still does not use this device, despite the advantages it brings and that in case of accident it can determine the life or death of a person.
In the following link you can download videos of real cases where you can see that both drivers and other passengers do not use the safety belt. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Xo7EkJGWu9vJa1AGjfRRWv0lU4pGAZ2h?usp=sharing
In these seven days, a total of 36,973 vehicles have been controlled, including passenger cars, taxis, freight vehicles and buses, 1.6% more than the vehicles controlled in the previous campaign and to which 419 complaints have been made to drivers and passengers for not making use of the regulatory retention system.
It is important to point out that 69% of all complaints were placed on conventional roads, a worrying fact when we consider that these roads are still the most dangerous because they are where the greatest number of fatalities are recorded and where it is even more important to take precautions.
IN DETAIL
Specifically, 392 adults have been punished for not using the safety belt, a figure that has been increased by 22% compared to the previous edition of this campaign and that means that 211 drivers, 76 passengers in the front seats and 105 in the rear seats did not travel properly protected in their vehicles in case of a traffic accident.
It is proven that the safety belt, in addition to reducing by 50% the risk of dying in a traffic accident, protects from getting fired from the cabin, as well as from impacting against the windscreen. In urban areas, the chance of being seriously injured or killed is 5 times lower if you wear a seatbelt.
With regard to child restraint systems, which are mandatory for minors with a height of 135 cm or less, the agents detected 27 who were travelling without using this safety device or who were travelling incorrectly, 21 in the rear seats and 6 in the front seats.
In the case of children, the use of child restraint systems is even more important as data show that nine out of ten serious or fatal child injuries would have been avoided if mandatory restraint systems had been used. In addition, in case of suffering a traffic accident, the injuries are reduced by up to 75% with an adequate use of them.
