The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has presented today at the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport the investment plan that Aena has proposed to the Executive, as a step prior to the incorporation in the Airport Regulation Document (DORA) 2027-2031, and which includes different actions for the eight airports operated by the Spanish airport management company in the Canary Islands.
This investment plan includes a total investment throughout the national territory of 12,888 million euros, of which 9,991 million euros correspond to regulated investments, while the rest will go to unregulated actions (associated to commercial activity), all based on a transversal strategy of sustainability in which the airports of Aena will be Net Zero in 2030.
In fact, environmental sustainability is one of the three priorities of Aena’s approach, in addition to attending to the increase in air traffic demanded, listening to companies and the tourism sector, as well as improving the experience of passengers, to continue moving forward in comfort and safety.
The forecast is that in the quinquennium 2027-2031 the most significant actions will begin in the Airport of Tenerife South, with a total investment of 550 million euros, which will include the integral remodeling of the terminal area, notably improving the passenger experience with an increase in surfaces of almost 50% (adaptation of the façade to the roads, the new billing area or remote boarding room) and capacity, the introduction of new technologies and the architectural integration of the terminal as a whole and with the environment.
In the case of Tenerife North Airport-La Laguna City, the investment will be 250 million euros, expanding the terminal building to provide it with sufficient capacity to meet the expected demand for traffic through the improvement of processes and with new surfaces, which will increase by more than 40%.
In particular, it is planned to expand the check-in area and the number of counters, the expansion of security controls in the most emblematic area of the building, the expansion of the boarding area and the number of doors, the expansion of the luggage collection room and the number of tapes, the functional distribution of parking spaces, and the accesses to the airport in coordination with the TF5 project.
In the quinquennium 2027-2031, significant actions will also be carried out in the Cesar Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, among them the improvement of processes: extension of counters and check-in area, extension of security and passport controls, extension of waiting areas for boarding and number of doors (generating two boarding areas, one for Schengen traffic and one for non-Schengen), extension of the room and baggage collection tapes and improvement of passenger services.
Changes will also be introduced in the architectural design of the airport, erecting a new identifying space of the island of Lanzarote, with a single cover, improvement of the interior image of the spaces, as well as accessibility and intermodality, almost doubling the current spaces since, in addition, the two terminals will be joined, maintaining a dedicated area for inter-island flights, as at present.
For the Gran Canaria Airport, whose building increased its area in previous performances by 68,000 square meters (from the original 105,000 to 173,000), This plan includes the adaptation of the terminal to the new security controls with state-of-the-art technology, improvements in façades or the reconfiguration of the arrivals hall, as well as actions in parking spaces.
In addition, this DORA will contemplate the elaboration of the functional design, in the initial phase of the projects, where it will be analyzed if further actions are necessary from now on.
In the Fuerteventura Airport, in which in previous periods more than 237 million euros were invested in a Modernization and Expansion Plan, it is planned for the next quinquennium the adaptation of the terminal to the new security controls with state-of-the-art technology, renewal of electromechanical installations, among others, in addition to the analysis of whether more far-reaching actions are necessary in the subsequent plans.
In the case of El Hierro Airport Actions are planned in the field of flight and platform (new parking position), improvement of security and increase of operational security (regeneration of pavements), information and communication systems, and sustainability: change to LED and renovation of purification system.
In addition, an investment of more than one million euros will be carried out for the expansion of parking, increasing by about 20% the number of places and refurbishing the current area.
In the La Palma Airport Actions are proposed to improve processes and quality in terminal area, actions in flight field and platform, improvement of safety, increase of operational safety (expansion of track strip), information and communication systems and sustainability, with the renovation of wind turbines and sound insulation.
In previous investment periods, a new terminal, new control tower, an Automatic Baggage Treatment and Inspection System, new SEI building and the expansion of the power plant were carried out at La Palma Airport, all with an investment of 225 million euros.
And the forecasts for the La Gomera Airport In the period 2027-2031 they comprise actions of improvement of processes and quality in terminal area, actions in flight field and platform, improvement of safety, increase of operational safety (renewal of the track rolling layer), and information and communication systems.
In addition, a photovoltaic plan has been designed, with the project of a photovoltaic solar park on land of La Gomera Airport, consisting of two photovoltaic solar plants, each with a occupied area of 0.59 hectares and a nominal power of 0.499MWn (0.581 MWp).
