- At the national level, 27.3 million euros are allocated to have 480 lifts and forklifts and 453 stairs and ramps
- Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes and Chamartín-Clara Campoamor will be joined by other major terminals such as Barcelona-Sants, Sevilla Santa Justa or València-Joaquín Sorolla
- The contract is added to others in force to ensure the reliability and operability of the entire railway system, such as roads or telecommunications, electrification, signalling and protection systems
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility will soon tender for 27.3 million euros (VAT not included), through Adif, a contract intended for the maintenance of elevators, stairs and mechanical ramps of 120 railway stations with high speed, long and medium distance service, to ensure their operability and reliability, and the accessibility and comfort of passengers.
In Madrid it will involve the completion of two of the largest terminals in the city, Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes and Chamartín-Clara Campoamor.
The three-year contract, which runs until the end of the current contract, will keep almost a thousand of these mechanical lifting systems in operation: the 480 elevators and forklifts, and the 453 stairs and ramps that add up to these stations, distributed throughout the national network.
Six lots
Given its scope, the contract is structured in six lots, covering the stations of six geographical areas of the network:
- Lot 1 includes nine stations in the central area, such as the two in Madrid, and those in Ávila or Segovia.
- Lot 2 comprises 21 stations in the eastern area, such as those in the high-speed corridor to Levante, Teruel or Valencia Nord.
- Lot 3, the 34 stations of the northeast, such as those of the LAV to Barcelona, Barcelona France, Reus or L’Amètlla de Mar.
- Lot 4 includes 21 stations in the northwest, including those in Asturias, Galicia, Zamora, León or Salamanca.
- Lot 5 adds up to 15 northern stations, such as those in Valladolid, Burgos, the Basque Country, La Rioja or Pamplona.
- And lot 6 the 20 stations of the south, among them those of the high-speed corridor or those of Extremadura.
Transformation of stations into sustainable mobility axes
The Ministry approves this new contract for the maintenance of elevators and escalators coinciding with the outstanding projects of construction of new stations, and transformation and expansion of others, which it is currently promoting, to make them a reference of the new sustainable, multimodal and connected mobility.
Thus, the contract includes maintenance in stations under construction, such as that of Reus Bellisens, and in remodeling such as, among others, the two of Madrid, Barcelona Sants or València Joaquín Sorolla, or the Galicians of A Coruña, Ourense and Santiago.
This action contributes to SDGs number 9 (promoting reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructures) and 11 (accessible cities with access to accessible modes of transport).
