The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco put the PERTE of the Circular Economy as an example of the government’s commitment to reducing the environmental footprint in the food sector. He did so at the closing of the conference ‘The sustainability of food packaging’, organized by the Union of Consumers of Galicia (UCGAL).
The delegate, who congratulated the president of UCGAL, María Rocío Arnoso, and its Secretary General, Miguel López Crespo, for the success in the theme of the day, highlighted the nearly 500 million euros in aid mobilized by the Government through this PERTE for the reduction of the consumption of raw materials and the generation of waste, of which more than 10 million euros have already arrived the Galician companies, and indicated that sustainability “is a transversal axis of all the policies carried out by the Government.”
In this sense, Pedro Blanco pointed out that “while some make jokes with water plugs, we are aware of the impact that our actions have on our health; on the health of the planet and, ultimately, on the future scenario that we are going to leave to the generations that follow us. Hence the importance of acting, and as soon as possible, better,” he said.
The delegate acknowledged that citizens are increasingly aware of sustainability and the efficient use of resources. “We know that the industry and distribution took note of this concern and you work to adapt to the expectations of consumers, but it is a joint work, which goes from the first to the last, involving also consumers, promoting increasingly responsible habits,” said the delegate before pointing out that “in this informative and informative work, companies and institutions must go hand in hand.”
Pedro Blanco insisted that the government is sensitive to this issue and that it thinks both consumers and companies, with measures such as the new law on packaging, “a law that marks ambitious objectives in line with those set by Europe”. However, he said that “it is important to look further and see the opportunities that are opening up in fields such as research or in the creation of new business projects, generators of employment, related to new packaging and its circularity, and there companies know that they have at hand this Government and the unique opportunity of the funds of the Recovery Plan”.
“We have a long way to go. A hard but motivating path, because in our hands, in the hands of everyone, consumers, administrations and companies, there is the challenge of changing the way of doing things for the greater benefit of society as a whole and we, as a Government, will continue to work to improve people’s lives,” he concluded.
