Madrid, June 25, 2024.- The Council of Ministers, at its meeting today and on the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has authorized to tender for about 14.5 million euros (VAT not included) a contract for the drafting, execution and provision of the service and maintenance for electrification that allows the electricity supply to cruises in the new terminal of the MSC, located in the port of Barcelona.
In particular, the Port Authority of Barcelona will tender for the drafting and implementation of the electrification project of this terminal. Through this electrical infrastructure, a medium-voltage line will be connected to an onshore power supply (OPS) substation, where a frequency change will also be operated in order to distribute and transfer this energy to the ship through a mobile cable management system on the quay. In addition, the connection and disconnection service of the cruises will be provided, as well as the maintenance of the electrical installation.
The electrical connection at the docks, the so-called OPS, allows the moored boats to turn off the auxiliary engines, thus reducing emissions into the atmosphere, as well as the noise produced by these. This helps to achieve the carbon reduction targets set in the FuelEU standard for ships and its land-based mirror standard, known as AFIR.
In this context, it should be remembered that in the port of Barcelona another OPS is being completed in the BEST terminal of Hutchison Ports for cargo ships. Both actions are part of the NEXIG-electrification plan, launched by the Port Authority of Barcelona within the firm commitment to the sustainability of the state-owned port system. This plan establishes the need to provide the port with the necessary infrastructure for the supply of electricity to ships, within the framework of the Community regulations on the decarbonisation of EU ports.
