The Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez, will moderate the Think Democracy and Its Challenges dialogue.

The First Vice-President of the Government, Minister of the Presidency, Relations with the Courts and Democratic Memory, Carmen Calvo, will inaugurate the conference The challenges of democracy today that she has organized, as Minister of Democratic Memory, when the 40th anniversary of the coup d’état of February 23 is celebrated.
The conference seeks to reflect on the situation of democracy in social reality, taking as points of reference the 40 years of the attempted coup d’état in Spain and the recent assault on the capitol in the United States. The subject will be addressed from the intellectual perspective and the Spanish democratic memory.
The first of the days will be held on February 22, under the title The challenges of democracy. 40 years after the coup d'état of 23F, and it will begin with the inauguration by the first vice-president, Carmen Calvo, at 18.00 hours.
At 6.30 p.m., the Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Zaragoza, Julián Casanova, will give the lecture El 23F and the totalitarian temptations of the 20th century.
The day will close at 7.30 pm with the dialogue Thinking about democracy and its challenges, which will be moderated by the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, Fernando Martínez and in which the professor of Political and Social Philosophy of the University of the Basque Country, Daniel Innerarity, the political scientist and professor of Sociology of the University of Zaragoza, Cristina Monge, will participate.
On February 23, at 18.00 hours, the conference will be resumed with an event entitled The Commitment to Democracy in which various personalities from the world of art and culture will explain their commitment to democracy.
All the events will be held at the headquarters of the Cervantes Institute in Madrid.
