Collonges-sous-Salève (France)
The Government of Spain regains the table at which Manuel Azaña signed his letter of resignation as President of the Republic in March 1939. The Secretary of State, Irene Lozano, received it, on behalf of the Government, in the French town of Collonges-sous-Salève, near the Swiss border. "This restoration to our historical memory, in addition to contributing to democracy and freedom, also provides a service to historical truth," he said during the donation that took place at the home of Luc Franzoni.
Franzoni is the grandson of Marcel Griaule, who welcomed Azaña during the first months of his exile in France. The family has guarded the table for 80 years. Until the procedures for its transfer to Spain are completed, the table is deposited at the Consulate of Lyon. The government hopes to bring it to Spain later this year, as part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Republican exile.
