The citizens of Vitoria and Álava have a new opportunity to contemplate ‘Cities of the World’, an interesting exhibition that will host the Subdelegation of the Government of Spain in Álava until June 19. It will be the fourth time that this central space usually destined to solve different administrative procedures becomes an exhibition hall, thus combining this space with culture.
The delegate of the Government of Spain in the Basque Country, Marisol Garmendia, was in charge of inaugurating this exhibition. The event was attended by, among other authorities, Laura Barbas, general director of the National Geographic Institute, the entity that owns the sample, and the Government’s sub-delegate in Álava, Mar Dabán.
Garmendia has shown its satisfaction for the launch of the exhibition ‘Cities of the World’, the fourth to be hosted by the Subdelegation of the Government in Álava after ‘Ecúmene: the evolution of the image of the world’; ‘The maps and the first round the world: the expedition of Magellan and Elcano’; and, more recently, ‘The Basque Country in the maps between the 2nd and 18th centuries’.
“When we opened the first exhibition, at the beginning of 2023, an exhibition had never been organized in this building before. The citizens were used to coming here only to carry out administrative procedures. We remember how, at first, many people approached this new cultural and informative dimension of this space with some shyness. However, from the first moment we were clear that the General Administration of the State should also be an open, accessible and close space, a place where in addition to managing procedures, we could share knowledge and culture”, recalled the delegate of the Government.
An exhibition “that invites us to travel through time and space, to contemplate how cities have been imagined, represented and understood throughout history. This exhibition invites us to travel in time and space and to understand who we were and who we are,” said Garmendia.
Un motivo apropiado porque “las ciudades son escenarios de convivencia, de progreso, de retos compartidos. They are the place where public action is concretized and where citizenship is built. We trust that it will reawaken interest and that it will continue to consolidate this space as a meeting point between administration and culture,” said the government delegate.
The Subdelegation of the Government in Álava has so far organized 276 guided tours aimed at very diverse audiences, and about 3,600 people have already passed through these rooms, many of them thanks to word of mouth. A fact that shows that this space can and should also be an open place, friendly and close to the citizens.
The exhibition will remain open for four months, until June 19 and can be visited freely in the mornings. Además, se ofrecerán visitas guiadas gratuitas que podrán concertarse a través del correo electrónico: ciudadesdelmundo.alava@correo.gob.es.
