The police forces operating in Navarre recorded a total of 33,422 criminal offenses in 2022, 14.6 percent more than in 2019, which is the statistical reference year being the last one not affected by the restrictions imposed to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, the crime rate in the Foral Community stands at 50.3 criminal offences per 1,000 inhabitants, above the national average of 49.
They are data of Balance of Criminality published today by the Ministry of the Interior and which reflects the evolution of crime in Spain recorded in 2022 by the State Security Corps (National Police and Civil Guard), the Security Corps dependent on the Autonomous Communities (Ertzaintza, Mossos d'Esquadra and Foral Police of Navarra), and also by those Local Police Corps that provide data to the State Security Forces and Corps.
As a statistical novelty, and to have a better X-ray to deal with this phenomenon, this balance sheet includes a specific breakdown on cybercrime. This statistical effort provides more complete information in line with the real evolution of criminality in Spain, affected by the growing penetration and use of the Internet for some years now, which has caused a strong transition of the criminal reality between conventional or traditional criminality and the new forms of criminality committed in cyberspace.
Thus, the total number of criminal offenses registered in the period January to December 2022 in Navarre adds a total of 33,422 crimes, of which 27,928 correspond to the category of conventional criminality, which includes all forms of crime not committed in cyberspace, and which increases by 7.6 percent over 2019. In contrast, cybercrime recorded a total of 5,494 criminal offenses accounted for, an increase of 71.1 percent compared to 2019.
With regard to the year 2019, crimes against heritage are decreasing. In particular, burglaries in homes, establishments and other facilities fell by 3.3 percent (1,464 compared to 1,514 in 2019); burglaries in homes fell by 2.1 percent (985 compared to 1,006); burglaries fell by 5 percent (8,109 compared to 8,538); while vehicle subtractions fell by 27.3 percent (133 compared to 183). On the other hand, robberies with violence and intimidation rose by 27.2 percent (421 compared to 331).
Drug trafficking crimes are down by 7.5 percent (147 compared to 159 in 2019) and the decrease is 40 percent in the case of wilful homicides and consummated murders (3 compared to 5 in 2019). Wilful homicides and attempted murders increase by 53.8 percent (from 13 to 20); and kidnappings go from 1 in 2019 to 2 in 2022.
Serious and less serious crimes due to injuries and tumultuous squabbles hardly vary, as they grow by 0.2 percent from 402 in 2019 to 403 in 2022.
On the other hand, crimes against sexual freedom maintain the trend of a sharp increase initiated a few years ago and grow by 65.1 percent (from 195 to 322). Penetrative sexual assaults increased by 85.7 percent: from 28 in 2019 to 52 in 2022; while the rest of crimes against sexual freedom grew by 61.7 percent (from 167 to 270).
This increase must be related, in part, to the active policies of raising awareness and reducing social tolerance towards this type of crime, which translates into a greater willingness of victims to report and reduces the levels of offending that exist in these types of crime.
With regard to cybercrime, computer scams increase by 76 percent (from 2,734 in 2019 to 4,813 in 2022), while the rest of cybercrime grows by 42.8 percent (from 477 crimes to 681).
