- The Provincial Leadership develops from today and until next day 23 a special control and surveillance campaign
April 17, 2022. The Provincial Traffic Headquarters has today launched a new speed control and surveillance campaign on the roads of the Region of Murcia that will last until next April 23 and that aims to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of respecting speed limits and reducing the number of accidents.
In 2021, overspeed was the concurrent factor in 22% of the 254 accidents with fatalities recorded on roads throughout Spain. In the Region of Murcia, inadequate speed was the main cause in 88 of the 602 accidents with victims registered in our interurban roads, which represents 14.61% of the total.
With the aim of reducing these accident figures, the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard will mobilize 200 agents to control and monitor the speed on interurban roads in the Region of Murcia during this week.
The European Transport Safety Council states that, if average speeds fell by just 1 km/h on all roads in the European Union, 2,200 road deaths could be avoided each year.

The speed and the offenses
A partir de 80 Km/h es prácticamente imposible que un peatón sobreviva a un atropello. At a speed of 30 km/h, the risk of pedestrian death is reduced to 5%.
The European Commission proposes that the new vehicles incorporate advanced driver assistance safety features, such as the Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) which, using GPS and a camera specialized in reading road signs, warns the driver when he is exceeding traffic limits. Other technologies mentioned are advanced emergency braking systems, assistance with vehicle maintenance in the lane or pedestrian detection systems.
