The Government Delegation has hosted a meeting between its holder, Sabrina Moh, and the Director General of the National Institute of Health Management (Ingesa), Isabel Muñoz, and its management team, in which the situation of public health in Melilla, the progress achieved in recent years and the challenges facing the health area of the city have been reviewed.
The meeting addressed the total opening of the University Hospital of Melilla (HUME) that will take place in the coming months, which will represent an unprecedented qualitative leap in health care. The new hospital, with a built area of 63,000 square meters and an investment of 150 million euros, will increase almost a hundred beds compared to the current Hospital Comarcal and will have state-of-the-art equipment, such as magnetic resonance imaging, robotic surgery, a hemodynamic room and a pediatric ICU, which places it at the forefront of Spanish public health.
Moh and the Ingesa Directorate have addressed the diagnosis that has been made to undertake the necessary improvements both in Specialized Care, with the HUME as a key element, and in Primary Care, where a plan of structural reform of health centers is being worked on. In fact, the Directorate of Primary Care is visiting the centres with technical staff to finalize the proceedings, in addition to the analysis of the prior online appointment with the aim of avoiding unnecessary travel to the citizens.
The meeting served to corroborate that the health of Melilla has as many or more resources than any health area of the peninsula with a similar volume of health cards, and that it also offers a broader portfolio of services due to the geographical uniqueness of the city.
To this is added the sustained growth in terms of recruitment: the Health Area currently has 1,141 professionals, which is a new historical record. Since 2024, 58 new personnel have been added, including four doctors in Primary Care and eight in Specialized Care. In the last decade, the increase in staff has been 27%, with 30% more specialist doctors compared to 2014.
At this point, Moh reiterated that the commitment of the Government of Spain is clear: to invest proportionately to safeguard the health security of citizens and strengthen a public system that continues to improve thanks to new infrastructures, more professionals and cutting-edge technology.
The meeting that served to allow the head of the Delegation to formally meet the team of the Territorial Directorate of Ingesa, since the renewal of the management team of the Health Area of Melilla has been completed, which has Noelia Vicente as director of Nursing of Specialized Care and Eva Luque as director of Nursing of Primary Care, in addition to Javier Moreno as territorial deputy director, together with Natalia Mata at the head of the Territorial Directorate.
