The Head of the Coordination Unit Against Violence Against Women of the Government Delegation in Melilla, Laura Segura, gave a talk on prevention and action against gender violence in the Training for Families of CEIP ‘Pedro de Estopiñán’.
“It is essential to create spaces in which to work together to eradicate gender violence from education in a practical way and involve families, as well as teachers, to generate real change,” he said.
The main objectives of this session are to provide families with strategies to promote egalitarian behavior and good treatment in their daughters and sons. And offer tools to families to detect and act in situations of violence against women and girls.
“School is a place where people spend many hours of their lives, it is a fundamental space for prevention but work must be shared with families,” he said.
“Everything educates family, school and society,” said Segura, who has indicated that the eradication of inequality, “which is the origin of gender violence, has a fundamental pillar in education.” “We need a true co-educational school and achieve a real egalitarian model in the classrooms and from the earliest ages, and for this it is fundamental to work with families,” he said.
Violence-free societies
Training activities for families such as this are very necessary and especially, at a time when speeches that deny inequality and gender violence endanger the progress made, attempts at setbacks are fought with firm democratic convictions and with an education in values, in rights, in principles, in equality and justice.” And “coeducation is one of the fundamental pillars to achieve a society free of violence against women and girls,” he said.

The Unit has addressed gender violence not only in adult relationships but also among the adolescent population. In addition, the concept of gender violence, causes, types, cycle of violence, consequences and myths has been addressed, as well as the importance of understanding the concept of violence to all the violence suffered by women because they are women. Causes of violence
The session has also served to analyze the latest published studies and the results related to minors and gender violence. Because gender-based violence does not only affect women, but also has a significant impact on sons and daughters, or on other children living in the home.
On the other hand, Segura has highlighted the importance of preventing gender violence in relationships between adolescents, so strategies for prevention and action have been offered. Analyzing some of the causes of this violence, such as sexist socialization, the false myths of romantic love and the model of hegemonic masculinity.

Segura has made it clear that by educating on equality, we are moving forward to put an end to male violence. Therefore, it has emphasized the need for the involvement of families and active positioning in the fight against Gender Violence.
