The railway connection to the External Port of Ferrol receives a new impulse with the approval of an aid of 17 million euros from the fund FEDER 2021-2027, thanks to the mediation of State Ports before the General Directorate of European Funds. The action will thus be incorporated into the Business Plan of the Port Authority of Ferrol 2026 as an investment financed at 60% with European funds, consolidating a project essential for the economic and logistical development of the region.
The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, valued this news very positively. "The approval of this new European aid demonstrates the firm commitment of the Government of Spain to the region of Ferrol. This infrastructure will improve the competitiveness of the port, attract more investments and generate employment and sustainable economic activity. The railway connection to the external port was a historical debt and today we are closer to paying it off."
The subdelegate also highlighted the role of institutional collaboration. "State ports, as an intermediary, played a key role in including this project in the current European funding period. This milestone is fundamental so that Ferrol is not left behind in the great challenges of the future, such as connectivity, sustainability and reindustrialization,” he said.
This work, fundamental for the connectivity of the port of Ferrol, had an approved aid in the previous Community framework 2021-2020 from the REACT funds of 59 million euros, although finally they could only absorb 32 million euros.
The new railway connection will significantly increase the loading and unloading capacity of Puerto Exterior, reducing logistical times and costs, and placing Ferrol as a reference in national and international maritime trade, especially in industrial and energy traffic.
This action is part of the EU’s objectives for a more connected and greener Europe, and is part of the global investment of 421 million euros managed by the state port system during the period 2021-2027, from the ERDF Programme and the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries and Aquaculture (FEMPA).
