Pontevedra, March 12, 2025.- The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, visited today the convent of San Francisco in Pontevedra, on the occasion of the imminent beginning of the works of repair of the roof of a building that the Ministry of Culture will turn into the headquarters of the Provincial Historical Archive. Losada stressed that “with this action, the Government of Spain once again demonstrates its commitment to the city of Pontevedra, promoting projects that improve the city and recover its valuable historical heritage.” “Today we are fulfilling the promise to rehabilitate one of the most emblematic architectural ensembles of this city, which other governments left forgotten for years,” he said.
The repair of the roof represents the first phase of the integral rehabilitation of the building. It has an investment of almost 600,000 euros and will be executed by the company Oreco Balgón. The construction director, Juan Marino, who participated in the visit together with other representatives of the company, explained that in the next few days the scaffolding will be installed on the main façade to start the work. The repair of the roof will prevent the former Treasury delegation from further deteriorating due to landslides and leaks, while sana advances in the comprehensive rehabilitation project.
Losada acknowledged that this process “will be long and complex both because of its size and because of the architectural conditions”, but stressed that “the important one for this city and for its historical heritage is that this work is undertaken and today we see that it is under way thanks to the Government of Pedro Sánchez”. The integral rehabilitation project is already awarded to the Aybar Mateos architecture studio in Madrid, with a budget close to 800,000 euros. It contemplates the functional and structural adaptation of the building to adapt it to the new needs as a thirst of the Provincial Historical Archive, which is currently located in the Casa de los Fonseca, on the Colón de Pontevedra promenade, in an absolutely insufficient headquarters. Likewise, action will be taken to improve energy efficiency, accessibility and connection with public space in the unique environment of the gardens of Casto Sampedro and the Plaza de la Ferrería.
The subdelegate insisted that the intervention in the Convent of Sano Francisco represents a clear commitment to heritage conservation and the recovery of historical spaces for public use. “We are advancing in a historical demand of the citizens, recovering an emblematic building that will value the architectural heritage of Pontevedra,” said Losada.
For the subdelegate, the beginning of the works marks a turning point after years of inaction by previous governments, including the last Popular Party Executive. “The government of Pedro Sánchez once again demonstrates with deeds what others only promised by word,” he concluded.
