The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, visited today the municipality of Camariñas accompanied by the head of the Unit Against Violence on Women of the Subdelegation, Manuela Vilaboy, to pick up the travelling suitcase against gender violence (MAVI) and learn about some of the activities that were developed in this city with the objective of promoting equality and raising awareness of the need to continue advancing in the fight against male violence.
In particular, the assistant delegate went to the IES Piedra del águila where she was able to talk with the participants of the Arao Reading Club, who today organized a workshop of decoration of bags of having it (known as ‘totebags’), and comment on her experience with the 14 titles written by women who are part of the MAVI. “These activities, which take place within the framework of the 8M, International Women’s Day, are fundamental to promote a more egalitarian society and free of gender violence,” said Rivas.
María Rivas recalled that currently in the province of A Coruña there are 2,685 active cases in the VioGén system of protection of victims of gender violence, so MAVI is “an essential tool to promote critical thinking in the face of stereotypes and gender roles that are socially perpetuated and promote gender violence”.
The travelling suitcase contains 14 titles written by women including ‘Lies to Be a Real Woman’. Manual for beginners’ by Rocío Salazar and ‘Those days when I was bad’ by Inma López Silva; as well as books aimed at children such as ‘There is something more boring than being a pink princess?’ by Raquel Díaz Reguera or ‘Good night tales for rebellious girls’ by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. It also includes a newspaper in which readers who wish to do so can reflect their experience through comments or suggestions with the aim of contributing to enrich this initiative that aims to be dynamic and improve their journey.
The travelling suitcase began its journey in Vimianzo in 2022 and since then has traveled 13 municipalities, the Social Insertion Center of A Coruña, and the NGO Fiet and continues its journey, since it currently has about 30 applications.
In Camariñas, she has been staying since November 8, “so it supported such important dates as 25N, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and 8M, International Women’s Day,” said the deputy delegate. In total there are five different suitcases traveling around the province. Tomorrow the subdelegate will be in the Somozas handing over one of them to the municpal Civic Center, while the rest will go to the municipalities and institutions of the province that request it.
