The deputy delegate of the Government in Ourense, Eladio Santos, and the mayor of the City of Ourense, Gonzalo Pérez Jácome, co-chaired this morning the meeting of the Local Security Board in which the necessary security devices were analyzed for the Popular Race of San Martiño and the upcoming Christmas parties, the situation of the city so far this year in terms of citizen security, data on gender violence and the Master Plan.
In terms of gender violence, the head of the Violence Against Women Unit of the Government Subdelegation, Alida Iglesias, detailed the current data, with 568 active cases in the province, 199 of them in the City of Ourense; as well as those referring to mortal victims, with 39 counted in Spain in 2024, three of them Galician.
Regarding the Master Plan for the Coexistence and Improvement of Security in Educational Centers and in their environments, the Government subdelegate highlighted the main objective of the same to “improve security through prevention, before crimes, violent behavior, harassment, cyberbullying, etc. happen. It also includes activities that seek to raise awareness in the school environment about gender violence.”
For his part, the Chief Inspector of Citizen Participation of the National Police, José Antonio Armero, detailed that in this academic year 23 talks have been held within this project, in order to increase this year those referring to gender violence, addictions and alcohol and drug consumption. Regarding the situation of citizen security in the capital during this 2024, the chief inspector of the Citizen Security Brigade of the National Police, José Manuel Barbero, highlighted the reduction in the total number of infractions by 4.21%, with a notable increase in the clarification of the facts. By type of crime, it should be noted that there has been a 3% increase in the number of crimes committed against individuals and a 5% increase in those related to gender violence. Crimes against sexual freedom were also increased by 6%, achieving a 92% clarification of these types of cases. For their part, the number of injuries fell by 7%, thanks to the collaboration of National, Local and Autonomous Police.
San Martiño Popular Race and Christmas
This meeting also addressed the reinforcement in personnel needed by the City of Ourense for the popular race of San Martiño, which is held this Sunday, November 10, due to the differences it drags in recent dates with the Local Police of Ourense. Thus, the mayor, Gonzalo Pérez Jácome, requested the collaboration of the Civil Guard to complement the local agents who will work on that day. In this regard, the deputy delegate said that “the National Police operations that will collaborate are the usual ones to reinforce this type of event. For its part, in principle, the Civil Guard does not have traffic competition in the city. Being aware of this need for assistance today we cannot guarantee this request because these are aspects that must be planned and organized in advance. However, I am sure that if the action of the Civil Guard were necessary, there is full collaboration between security forces and, if the Local Police were to request it, they would act.”
In the same line of security against multitudinous activities, the measures that will be implemented in the next Christmas festivities were discussed. For its part, the National Police announced that it will carry out controls to avoid theft, scams or bottles, and will carry out a campaign to disseminate prevention measures so that citizens can apply when they leave their homes empty during the holidays.
Along with deputy delegate and mayor, the Local Security Board was attended by the territorial delegate of the Xunta in Ourense, Manuel Pardo; the chief and inspector of the Local Police, María Barrera and Azumero Rubio; the chief inspectors of the Citizen Security and Citizen Participation Brigade of the National Police, José Manuel Barbero and José Antonio Armero; the head of the Autonomous Police, Breográn Rivo; the president of the A.V.
