Pontevedra, October 2, 2024.- The subdelegate of the Government in Pontevedra, Abel Losada, presided over the acts of the National Police Day with a speech in which he defined the Corps as a “bastion of democracy” that guarantees the rights and freedoms of citizens proclaimed by the Constitution. “You have more than enough reason to wear the blue uniform with pride, which is a guarantee of peace, security and coexistence, because Democracy is nothing more than the rules we gave each other,” he said in his speech.
The events of the Day of the Guardian Angels were attended by a large part of the endowments of the Commissariats of Pontevedra, Vilagarcía and Marín, headed by the provincial commissioner-chief, Juan José Díaz. Among the attendees was also the mayor of Pontevedra, #Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores and other civil and police authorities.
Abel Losada said that in a few weeks the new Police Cooperation Center of Tui will be inaugurated, which will mean a significant improvement in the conditions in the service. And he said that he will work hard, “to put my degree of sand so that I can leave with the satisfaction of having contributed to the challenge of seeing the new Commissariats of Pontevedra and Marín standing, which are two priority needs.”
In his speech, he recalled that in its recent past Spain made the mistake of thinking that it could emerge from an economic crisis by cutting public services, including police appropriations, “and it became clear that these cuts are very expensive and, in the end, they must be reversed because society ends up demanding it”. He added that the debate now, with the largest calls for seats in history, is beginning to be “no longer about covering all the seats in the police stations, but about expanding catalogues.”
The subdelegate stressed that in the 9 months he has been in this office “I hear nothing but requests from more police and more civil guards everywhere” and stressed that “all mayors, of all political signs, are in that request, some loudly and others quietly; even in these times, when there are more agents than ever”.
He also warned of the challenge posed by the emergence of cybercrime in the pandemic, to the point that today’s police no longer only patrol and investigate “face-to-face crimes”, but, increasingly, crimes that are perpetrated by distance. In this regard, he valued the work of the National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE) with its toll-free telephone number 017 and the encouragement of the National Police and the Civil Guard to the Master Plan to work for security with school communities, as well as the Master Plan, to work with older people.
For his part, the commissioner, Juan José Díaz, expressed the “pride we feel on this day to protect the rights and freedoms of all Spaniards,” taking the opportunity to reiterate that “no physical or other barrier will prevent the vehicles of the National Police from continuing to patrol all the streets of this city fulfilling the constitutional duty to protect citizens.”
The commissioner congratulated all the agents “who are striving to make Pontevedra one of the safest provinces in Spain” and stressed the commitment of the body against drug trafficking, noting that since October 2023 nine operations were carried out with 30 detainees and 7 entries and records. In this period, 782 kg of cocaine, 31 kg of heroin, 21 kg of hashish, more than 1,700 marijuana plants were intervened, as well as a total of 310,000 euros in cash and several vehicles.
During the event, honorary decorations were awarded to several agents for their outstanding work in the performance of their duties.
