The deputy delegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, intervened this morning in the inauguration of the I International Congress of LGTBI+ Seniors organized by the Foundation on December 26, where she highlighted the work and commitment of the Government with the extension of rights and the need to recognize and make visible the elderly of the LGTBI+ community, since, in the not so distant past, many of them saw their freedoms limited by reason of their sexual orientation.
The subdelegate especially highlighted, among all the rules implemented by the Government of Pedro Sánchez, Law 4/2023, of February 28, for the real and effective equality of trans people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people; “a law, extremely combated from the right, and whose objective is to be a guarantee of the protection and rights of LGTBI people in all areas of life, from access to health to protection against discrimination,” said Rivas.
María Rivas recalled that this law comes to implement support programs that include specialized health services, psychological support and community activities to promote inclusion and well-being. It is also firmly committed to education and awareness through education campaigns to eradicate harm and discrimination; stressing that the priorities of this Law fit perfectly with the trajectory and work already done by this December 26 Foundation.
The subdelegate congratulated the Foundation for its unceasing commitment to the dignity and inclusion of LGBTI+ seniors, promoting research, training, the creation of services, safe spaces and also the important task of recovering the historical memory of the LGBTI+ community.
The subdelegate recalled that Spain is currently the fourth country in the world where the rights of LGBTI+ people are most respected and the Rainbow Index indicator, (which is produced annually by the international federation of entities that fight for the rights of lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual and intersex people) points out that Spain is a country with a good quality of life for LGBTI+ people compared to other European countries and the rest of the world.
María Rivas, concluded her speech by expressing the Government’s commitment to maintain a permanent dialogue with representative entities and give support to organizations working in favor of LGTBI+ rights.
