The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, visited today the city of Dodro to deliver the “Travelling Suitcase against Gender Violence” (MAVI). This initiative aims to promote equality and raise awareness of the need to continue advancing in the fight against male violence, and with this stop in Dodro he has already visited 12 municipalities and entities of the province of A Coruña.
The deputy delegate was received at the facilities of the Municipal Library by the mayor of Dodro, Xabier Castro, whom she thanked for the reception. The subdelegate pointed out in the presentation of the suitcase the municipalist character of this initiative, highlighting that the collaboration and involvement of the municipalities is fundamental for the success of the same. “It is the municipalities, especially in rural areas, that can organize reading animation activities to make available to neighbors and neighbors the books that each suitcase incorporates, while using them to raise awareness about the value of equality,” said Rivas.
The deputy delegate and the municipal councilor were also accompanied by the councilor for Culture, the head of the municipal library and the sociocultural animator, as well as neighbors and neighboring users of the reading club, and the deputy delegate transferred the program of activities that they are going to carry out with the MAVI in the three months that it will remain in this city.
Rivas indicated that there are 5 objectives of this campaign: to bring the neighborhood closer to reading on issues of feminism, violence against women, empowerment or self-esteem, etc. ; promote critical thinking in the face of gender roles and stereotypes; promote reading as a tool for equality; raise awareness of gender violence; and promote the reading of texts written by women, so that society has female references in the field of culture.
The suitcase will remain in Dodro for up to three months, and contains a total of 14 titles. So there are 5 child-youth reading titles such as “Is there anything more boring than being a pink princess” by Raquel Díaz Regueira, or “Tales for good nights for rebellious girls” by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo. It also contains 9 books for adults such as ‘Lies to Be a Real Woman. Manual for beginners’ by Rocío Salazar and ‘Those days when we were bad’ by Inma López Silva.
The latest addition to the MAVI is a collection of drawings donated by Rosa de Cabanas entitled “Brave Women”, which represents well-known but also anonymous women, each with its value in the society of the moment, women referents writers, painters, scientists, architects, sculptors, costureiras, teachers, activists on many occasions silenced by history.
Each suitcase consists of a diary in which readers who wish to do so can reflect their experience through comments or suggestions. The objective is that they contribute to enrich the initiative that aims to be dynamic and improve throughout its journey.
“The travelling suitcase is a small contribution to provide Dodro’s neighbors and neighbors with information and training on equality and thus work actively to achieve a fairer and more egalitarian society,” said Rivas. In this sense, a subdelegate referred to the last campaign of the Ministry of Equality that through the question “Are you going to do something?” they involve the whole society to take sides, to place ourselves next to the victims, and contribute to the necessary change to achieve that more egalitarian society and where machismo and gender violence have no place.
The deputy delegate recalled that we have to bet and work from all areas to educate and raise awareness so that no more victims of gender violence continue to be added”, so MAVI is “an essential tool to achieve a more egalitarian, fairer society and free of male violence”.
