The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, thanked the president of the Provincial Council of A Coruña, Valentín González Formoso, for his solidarity in offering to welcome 44 migrants who arrived in the Canary Islands and were destined for Galicia to the residence of the IES Rosalía Mera de A Coruña. Pedro Blanco and Valentín González Formoso held a working meeting to address the migration emergency in the territory.
Pedro Blanco highlighted the good news of being able to count on these places, “something that means contributing in solidarity not only with all those people who arrive in our country fleeing the war, but with the Autonomous Communities that are suffering unprecedented pressure.” The delegate highlighted the solidarity commitment of the Provincial Council and its president, highlighting the importance of proper institutional collaboration.
“At times like this it is important to add, as the Provincial Council of A Coruña is doing, demonstrating that Coruña and Galician society are in solidarity and understand the serious problem that these migrants are going through, who arrive in the Canary Islands and then in Galicia after escaping nothing more and nothing less than from a war in their country of origin, Mali.”
The government delegate took advantage of the working meeting to inform that during this Tuesday the first 104 migrants will arrive in Santiago de Compostela, being installed in the premises of Monte del Gozo. The rest of the territories will see migrants arriving gradually over the next few days and weeks.
He took the opportunity to thank the Xunta de Galicia for their collaboration and total willingness to tackle this emergency in the best possible way. “The smooth collaboration both with the Autonomous Administration and with the mayors and mayors of the municipalities to which migrants are expected to arrive is constant and necessary, allowing us to offer an appropriate response to the circumstances,” said the government delegate.
The president of the Provincial Council, for his part, recalled that this administration already hosted refugees from the war in the Balkans and, until recently, also from the war in Ukraine. “We have to live up to the circumstances and continue to exercise the spirit of solidarity that characterizes the province, offering the State and the Xunta a total of 44 places in the IES Rosalía Mera for the reception of people in the face of the humanitarian crisis that their countries and the Canary Islands are suffering,” said Valentín González Formoso.
