The government delegate in Galicia, Pedro Blanco, stressed this morning the importance of modernizing the sea-industry sector to ensure the maintenance of a profitable and competitive activity, “fundamental for the future of fishing in Galicia”. He said this during a meeting with the leaders of the Puerto de Celeiro group and the Fishermen’s Brotherhood, in which he was accompanied by the mayor of Viveiro, María Loureiro, and the subdelegate in the province, Isabel Rodríguez.
The delegate framed this meeting “in the permanent dialogue of this Government with the fishing sector, a positive and productive meeting to give a joint response to the challenges and challenges of an industry that employs more than 50,000 people, 50% of the maritime fishing employment of all of Spain”.
In this regard, he stressed that “we are on the side of the sector in order to promote the productive fabric and economic development of fishing in Galicia”, placing Porto de Celeiro as a reference point as a paradigm that the Government defends, “the commitment to a modern fishing activity, sustainable and with a future”. Thus, he stressed “that the future of the sector involves the renewal and modernization of the fleet to have safer, more efficient and comfortable ships that move towards decarbonization”. In this context, he said that soon the aid will come from the PERTE Mar-industry, a call with 40 million euros of budget of the Recovery Plan, “so demanded by the Galician industry”.
On the other hand, Pedro Blanco reported that Galicia is the CCAA that receives the most funds from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (FEMPA) in Spain, with a total of 366 million euros, so he asked the Xunta responsibility in management and to execute all the programs “so that not a single euro remains without investing in Galicia”.
In this line, the Government of Spain allocated 70 million euros in aid for fuel, compensating for the extraordinary costs derived from Brexit, COVID-19 or the war in Ukraine. In addition, the delegate stressed the lack of generational relief and the importance of actions aimed at maritime fishing training, such as the one promoted in Porto de Celeiro on board the ship Intermares.
In conclusion after the meeting, the delegate concluded by saying that “we gather the demands of the sector and we will continue working hand in hand, because the Government of Spain believes in fishing and in its future”.
