The subdelegate of the Government in A Coruña, María Rivas, today called for prudence and citizen responsibility on the roads coinciding with the beginning of the second phase of the Christmas Traffic Operation, which lasts between the afternoon of today and midnight of January 1 . During these days, the roads of the province of A Coruña will be used by 176,000 vehicles, according to the forecasts of the General Directorate of Traffic: “We are talking about 26% of the vehicles that will travel these days through Galicia, almost a third of the total”.
María Rivas asked drivers and other users to keep the traffic rules and adapt the driving to the state of the road and weather conditions so as not to add any more deceased people in the province. In this sense, he warned about short trips and on the secondary roads, in which it is “absolutely necessary not to fall into excesses of confidence”. He regretted that, since the beginning of Operation Nadal, on December 22, 3 people had died on the roads of the province.
The subdelegate reiterated the total disposition of the means of the Traffic Subsector of the Civil Guard, the DGT and the means of road conservation to make possible safe circulation on the roads of the province. And he reiterated the motto chosen this year by the Directorate General of Traffic for its Nadal campaign, which insists on the importance of reaching the destination.
The subdelegate said that at this time, special attention will be given to nightlife areas, tourism and commercial areas, which account for the majority of travel. It will also focus on the prevention of alcohol and drug consumption at the wheel.
This year’s Nadal Traffic Operation runs from December 22 to January 7. Throughout these dates there will be 3 phases in coincidence with the festive days. The first one took place around Christmas Eve and Christmas. The second begins today and will end next Monday. The third will begin next Friday and will end on January 7 in the evening. During these three phases the roads of A Coruña will be used by 718,000 vehicles, almost a third of the 2.1 million that will travel on the roads of Galicia.
