The government delegate in Galicia advanced today that the end of next year will be in service the new passenger building of the train station of Santiago de Compostela, which he defined as a modern and functional building, adapted to the needs of high speed and to the height of the capital of Galicia. Pedro Blanco, together with Mayor Goretti Sanmartín and the deputy delegate in A Coruña, María Rivas, supervised the construction works of the new passenger building, which is financed with 30 million euros by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA), through Adif AV/AV.
During the visit, the delegate exemplified in Santiago the commitment of the Government of Pedro Sánchez and the Ministry of Transport for intermodality in the cities of Galicia. He recalled that this commitment currently translates into investments that exceed 260 million euros in actions that are in execution (Santiago and A Coruña) or in different phases of contracting (Ourense and Lugo).
In addition, the delegate added this work to the set of actions that the current Government unblocked in the capital of Galicia and that add up to 200 million euros: “We are working in all parts of this city: in the north, with the Orbital and Orbitaliño and in the south with this new station, key investments to which we will add the cleansing news and which they set in motion with this Government.”
Pedro Blanco toured several points of the performance, which is very advanced. In September of this year, the works affecting tracks 5, 6 and 7 and platform 3 were completed. The outer envelope of this area is also finished, the lack of complete upper floors and equipment. At the moment, work is being done on the Plaza de la Estacion as well as on the excavation of the foundation of the structure that occupies platform 2, for which roads 2 and 3 A were cut off.
A new building integrated in the city
The new passenger building rises above the current beach of roads, resting on the platforms with specific supports. The building will form a volumetric unit with the pedestrian walkway on tracks already in service, from which it will have access and connect the urban network, the railway station and the bus terminal, improving the current intermodality environment for the city of Santiago.
For its implementation, the existing platforms are conditioned, establishing a system of vertical connections that joins the main lobby, located on a higher level, with the area of railway use. In addition, the necessary adaptation works are being carried out in the current passenger building to adapt it to the new functional reality of the station: the connection of Galicia to the high-speed network.
Within the framework of this action, the parking area will also be restructured, located between the first platform and the talude that traces the northern limit of the plot, and the interior area of the station will be urbanized between Calle del Hórreo and the different constructions of the railway complex and between its East and West accesses.
The works of the new building will respect and complement the actions completed at the Santiago station in 2018, which represented improvements in the configuration of railway tracks and facilities, platforms, canopies, the expansion of the passenger building and the rearrangement of interior roads, parking and access to the station.
The actions contribute to the fulfillment of SDG 9, which has among its goals to develop reliable, sustainable and quality infrastructures; and 11, which aims to provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems.
