• Throughout 2024, a total of 1,432 people were reported in Cantabria for driving using their mobile phone
The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) is launching this week, from October 6 to 12, an intensive surveillance and control campaign to avoid distractions at the wheel since they are the cause of 18% of road accidents and 30% of accidents with fatalities.
For this reason, up to 180 agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard in Cantabria, together with the local police, will monitor all kinds of distractions both on interurban roads and in urban areas.
In addition to roadside surveillance, the automated means available to the DGT will be added, with 245 cameras installed on roads throughout the country, through which it can be seen, among other things, whether the driver uses his mobile phone while driving.
According to data from the Electronic Survey on the attitudes of road users (ESRA-2023), Spanish drivers claim to have low regard for the risks of using mobile phones.
This study shows that 22.2% of Spanish drivers acknowledged making telephone calls without using hands free on their mobile, compared to 58.6 who did use it; in addition, 24.7% of drivers acknowledged reading text messages and following social networks while driving.
In this same campaign in October 2024, 202 drivers were reported in Cantabria, 100 of whom were driving using the mobile phone manually. In addition, throughout 2024 a total of 1,432 people were reported in the community for driving using the telephone móvil.Texto
