The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, has awarded a contract of 5.9 million euros for the improvement and extension of the useful length of the tracks of the logistics terminal of Muriedas (Cantabria) and that can accommodate trains of up to 608 meters. This investment in the line of the conventional Palencia-Santander network represents a new commitment of the Department for the increase in freight traffic by rail.
The expansion works will focus on the interior roads, in 9 of its 12 section roads, in both headwaters, on both the Santander and Palencia sides, and include platform, track and electrification actions.
The action, within the framework of the agreement signed by Adif, State Ports and the Port Authority of Santander, will provide the logistics facility with the capacity to manage freight trains with a more competitive useful length and add to the works of track duplication between Torrelavega and Guarnizo, which will act on the terminal’s circulation routes.
In this way, the rail transport of goods on this line and traffic with the Port of Santander will be enhanced, taking advantage of synergies between both modes of transport promoting more sustainable mobility.
The Muriedas terminal, located in Camargo, has a 12-way secluded beach (secondary roads linked to the general road, which is used to cross and park trains) and 2 mango roads.
To adapt the electrification to the new layout, new foundations and placement of posts will be executed for the replacement of the funicular porticoes by rigid porticoes, thus providing two contact wires to the beach of tracks.
New ground cable laying, anchors and installation of new signage will also be deployed, among other actions, for the improvement and expansion of the current service routes. The work will be carried out by the UTE integrated by Cycasa Canteras y Construcciones and Syneox Rail.
European funding
The works to expand the sideways of the logistics terminal of Muriedas will have European funding, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. Funded by the European Union NextGeneration EU.
