The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has highlighted today, through the General Directorate of Civil Aviation, that the Seve Ballestries-Santander Airport will have 29 destinations for this summer season (15 national and 14 international) operated by seven airlines.
At the meeting of the Cantabrian Airport Coordination Committee, which analyzed on Wednesday the current situation and possible measures to boost airport activity in Cantabria, it was also noted that the Seve Ballesteros Airport – Santander broke its traffic record in 2023 with more than 1.2 million passengers.
In addition, Aena’s commitment to regional airports has been valued with the incentive plan recently approved by the company that will benefit the Cantabrian airport.
This measure, which means that airlines operating at airports of less than three million passengers will be exempt from paying the fare per passenger of all passengers additional to those of 2023 for three consecutive years, will help consolidate Cantabria’s air connectivity.
All institutions are committed to continuing to join efforts to attract as many airlines as possible to improve the airport’s connection offer.
In the course of the meeting, the importance of the Seve Ballestries-Santander Airport beyond passenger transport has also been highlighted. In this regard, it has been recalled that the Airport extended its operating hours in 2023 up to 17 times to accommodate flights from the National Transplant Organization, facilitating its facilities for a total of 42 ONT operations.
Participation in airport development strategy
The Airport Coordination Committees (CCAs) allow the participation of the autonomous communities, local entities and civil society in the development strategy of the airports located in their territories.
In this sense, they constitute efficient spaces for dialogue between the airport manager and the region, safeguarding the operator’s management autonomy and within the current competitive framework. Its objective is that the airport infrastructures incorporate and anticipate the necessary demands for the economic and social progress of the communities in which they are located, and at the same time, contribute from each territory to guarantee the competitiveness of the airports and the sustainability of the airport system.
The meeting, attended by representatives of the Government of Cantabria, the delegate of the Government in Cantabria, and representatives of local entities, economic, trade union and social organizations, and of Aena, has taken place in a cordial climate that has reflected the good harmony between all the agencies and institutions, with a clear desire for coordination to continue working for the future of air connectivity in Cantabria.
